I Feel Like a Club Bouncer

You know those security people who guard the nightclubs that are called "bouncers?" I feel like a bouncer. I'm trying to protect my mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's. Two weeks ago one of her friends took her out of the memory care facility for a few hours to visit her home and have lunch. She was ill-equipped to deal with MIL's issues. The Memory Care Facility called me and advised me to not let that person take MIL out in the future so I had to have the awkward conversation with this 81 year old woman about how she can visit MIL but she can't take her out. Yesterday we get a call from MIL that "some woman called me and she's going to take me out Monday but I don't remember who it is." We eventually figured out who called MIL and I immediately worried. G is a 73 year old scatterbrained brassy woman who uses a walker. I'm not putting G down, but she is clearly not able to handle MIL. So I called G and told her I felt she wasn't capable of dealing with MIL and suggested she just visit her instead of taking her out. G was offended, but I held firm because I don't want anything bad to happen to MIL. Eventually G and I reached an agreement that G would take another former co-worker of hers and MIL's with her so two people would be handling MIL and not just G. I know I sound bossy and tough, but I have to do what I have to do to protect MIL who is vulnerable.

Good job. Your MIL needs someone to look after her best interests since she can't.

Do any of them have ill intent toward her?

They’ll find out why you insisted on bringing an extra person with them when they go out Monday. I’m kind of surprised the Memory Care people let non family members take her out anyway.

You mean well, they have to understand that it won't be their way when it comes to your MIL

@looeyville You just have to take charge sometimes. It’s a bit like being a parent who decides what’s good for the child and is the worst in the world for it.
