I tried yoga today!

Over the years a few people have told me they go to yoga sessions and find them beneficial, and I’ve kind of thought about it but never been able to bring myself to go. But more recently I have met two women, on separate occasions, who looked in great shape, and I had to ask them whether they did anything in particular to look so good, and they both told me: yoga. The last person I asked told me there were sessions of yoga in the park on Sunday mornings. “You should come” she told me. “It’s free, it’s outside in nature; you’ll love it.” Well after thinking about it I decided I would give it a go. A lot of the things that put me off about trying before – like having to sign up for classes, having to decide which of the many varieties of yoga to try, walking into the class as a newbie, feeling self-conscious about not really knowing what to do or maybe not being able to do it, not having the ‘right’ things to wear, maybe deciding not to go back - would not be a problem. All you have to do is turn up, spread out your mat or towel on the grass and join in. No need to even talk to anyone. And if you don’t like it you can just leave. So I set out to the place shown. The instructions said there was parking on the nearby road, but I didn’t know how busy it might be or whether all the spaces near the park might be full, so as soon as I got to the right road I parked up and walked. Turned out I didn’t need to park so far away and I’d given myself a walk of about 15 minutes so I was a bit late, but it didn’t matter. When I got near I was just trying to decide if I should take the left or right fork in the path when a stream of people carrying yoga mats hurried past, so I just followed them. Once we arrived everyone had spread out their mat or towel and just did their thing. Most did what the leader said; some did their own variation. Some people had a break to just lie down and look at the blue sky and the sun shining on the leaves. The yoga wasn’t as difficult as I thought it might be and the only real issue was that I couldn’t always hear the leader clearly because I was right at the back, and even when I did I didn’t always know what she meant as I don’t know the names of the different positions so sometimes I would have to shift position so I could look up, or at least try to see what other people were doing. On the whole though it was a good experience. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I loved it, but it got me out in the morning and felt like a good way to start the day. I’m definitely considering going again. The only real downside is that it does take up a good chunk of my Sunday morning. Have you tried yoga? Do you like it? What are all the different types? Have you tried yoga before? Or is it something you do regularly?

Good for you for going. I bought a DVD years ago on Beginner’s yoga. I think it was beneficial to me, for no other reason that gentle exercise like that is good for my kind of health problems. The stretching aspect was very beneficial. I learned harder poses until my back got worse and then went back to beginner’s again. Now the next thing you need to try is goat yoga. I really want to get your take on that.

I know I could get a book of poses or watch a DVD or YouTube tutorial - but there's no way I would be trying that in the living room with the family walking in and going 'What are you doing??' I have a lot of admiration for people who manage to do any kind of exercise at home (unless they live alone)!
