Does anyone think "sooth" means truth? I have heard it, and probably used it, mean to help a person who is injured or the like. Maybe to make it easier on a person. "She soothed the man's sunburn with cool water and some aloe vera." So, maybe the word sooth and soothe are actually two different words. Good grief! Make them MORE different. Forsooth!

Sure, they are different words. I immediately thought of "soothsayer", but I thought it meant more like "fortune teller" than "truth teller".

Yes, "soothsayer" does mean "truth teller" since sooth means "truth." Of course that is probably the final remnant of the word. Soothe is another story...
