One thing the June countdown did for me was throw open a world of possibilities. In the ten years or so that I’ve been doing this, I’ve always used a particular word that was in the title. In June, I went into the lyrics for references to the Beatles, NOT relying on the title alone. So welcome to the first countdown that’s going to take advantage of that philosophy. Gather up your quarters, we’re heading for the jukebox in July! The main reason I wanted to use the lyrics as well as the titles was simple: if I relied solely on songs with “jukebox” in the title, they’d all be country songs. This way I can give you a few rock songs as well as the country tunes, where jukeboxes used to be as ubiquitous as pickup trucks are now. To kick it off, here’s your teaser. Sure, I could have used the big hit by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, or even the original by the British band the Arrows (the Joan Jett version is very close to the original), but heck, why not let you have a laugh along with the song! Here’s the very talented Joe Piscopo, who has sadly faded into obscurity after his Saturday Night Live stardom, impersonating Frank Sinatra singing “I Love Rock and Roll” (“put some coin in the jukebox”) as part of a medley that also features things from “I Know What Boys Like” to “Cold As Ice” to “Life During Wartime” to my favorite bits, “Under My Thumb” (“the change has come. Thumb!”) and “Born to Run” (“one groovy cat, Bruce Springstein”). Get those quarters ready!

His partner in crime, Eddie Murphy, had the bigger hit (“Party All the Time”), which was also the lesser of the two singles.

@FourWalls - We played "Party All the Time" at the station when it was released. I don't remember us playing Joe Piscopo, though. We did play "You Look Marvelous" for some reason.

Glad you did! I always thought it was pretty funny, especially given Frank Sinatra’s disdain for rock and roll.

The song is comedy; the theme is jukeboxes.

I remember Joe Piscopo doing music and having a few hit songs in his prime. I wonder why he faded from the spotlight.

I don’t know. Maybe he wasn’t as “shocking” as his SNL partner in crime Eddie Murphy was.
