What Does the 4th of July Mean to Americans?

United States
July 3, 2026 11:58am CST
A few people on myLot who don't live in the United States and @wrexxo specifically asked and wanted to know what the 4th of July celebrations are all about in the USA. It's also known as Independence Day. I'm no historian, but I'll try to get it right. People left England in the 1600's to avoid "taxation without representation" and freedom of religion among other things. They came to the new land now called The United States of America. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress, who was the governing body of the new country at that time, approved the Declaration of Independence (which wasn't officially signed until August 1776) indicating that the USA and its people were now free from England's rule. So July 4th marks my country's foundation as an independent country. This year, 2026, is a big deal because it is my country's 250th birthday of being a country. Yes, we are still relatively new compared to most of the rest of the world. What we SHOULD be celebrating is our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to vote, appreciation of our soldiers who fought for our freedom, and our independence. Instead, what most Americans WILL be doing is drinking beer, having cookouts, and going to the Lake. Oh, and then there's the fireworks. People set off fireworks on the 4th of July. Individuals set them off and big cities have huge fireworks displays. They represent the battles we fought for the freedoms we have. Founding Father John Adams pictured the holiday being celebrated with “Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations,” which included fireworks to symbolize the joy and triumph of independence. So I hope this gives those of you who don't live in the USA an idea of what's going on over here this weekend.
