And we aren’t talking about the band that unleashed Dave Grohl onto the world. This is not the Grunge Department, this is the Get Down Lyrically Department - songs with “Get Down” in the lyrics. “When the music is loud, we all get down,” sings Ian Astbury on “Nirvana,” the lead track from The Cult’s 1985 album, Love. Although you could dance to this, it’s more of a rock and roll tune than the dance tunes that have been landing here in this series so far. It’s a Billy Duffy guitar-fest with a driving beat, perfect for both getting loud and getting down. “Nirvana” was not released as a single (yet they shot a promotional video for the tune anyway.) It would have made a solid single, but I don’t work for Beggars Banquet Records, so what do I know? The album itself did well-enough - #5 in Canada, #4 in the U.K. (87 in the States.) Love has been certified Gold in both the U.S. and U.K., and 2 x Platinum in Canada. It might’ve sold even better had “Nirvana” been released as a single, but again, what do I know?
