Time to get down with your funky self again, as we celebrate songs with “Get down” in the lyrics. Lyrics that involve having a good time, dancing, being free. This song also is about having a good time, albeit a good time that involves a monetary transaction. We’re talking about “Bad Girls” by Donna Summer. The late, great Queen of Disco, Donna Summer (1948-2012) got the idea for “Bad Girls” (she co-wrote the song with members of the band Brooklyn Dreams) after a cop mistook one of her assistants for a prostitute. (Fun fact: Still signed to Casablanca Records at the time, Summer refused Casablanca head honcho Neil Bogart’s idea to give the song to Cher to record.) Like the album that shares its title, “Bad Girls” was a smash (Summer was the first female artist to have two songs in the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, one being “Bad Girls”) internationally as well as here at home. The “get down” lyric is just a lyric in the middle of the tune - “Spirit’s high and legs look hot, do you wanna get down” - but the song is catchy thanks to the memorable “toot toot’s” and “beep beep’s” and police whistles. (Another Fun Fact: Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter plays the guitar solo on the track.) It’s timeless disco.
