Playing With Other People's Toys

One of my college roommates is a high profile attorney in Florida. Another former college roommate is a senior engineer with Pratt & Whitney. Both are very wealthy, and have lots of expensive toys. Being close to both of them, I have the luxury of getting to use those toys without actually having to buy them myself! My engineer friend has a beautiful boat that we take out on the ocean frequently. And since he often has to travel to Connecticut for business meetings at Pratt & Whitney's headquarters, he'll often let me use his boat while he's gone. My lawyer buddy just bought two wave runners. He hasn't even used them yet. Him and his wife are leaving for New York City for the rest of the summer, so he called me the other day and asked if I wanted to break them in for him while he's gone. Being the ever so loyal and dedicated friend, I could not refuse his offer! So today he dropped off the wave runners. Attached is a photo of them. Don't they look gorgeous? Originally, I had planned on doing absolutely nothing this weekend, but now the plans have definitely changed! The girlfriend and I are going to take the wave runners to the beach this weekend and have a little fun! Isn't it fun playing with other people's toys?

I don't know if either of these two friends have ever been to the UK, but I have a third college friend who is from England, and I could always introduce you to him! He's more into cars than anything else. He has quite a collection of Saab vehicles. Maybe you can sweet talk him into giving you one!

It sure can be. My older step-brother had a boat we'd go out in. It was up in Idaho. And my Auntie on Long Island sure did have a nice pool! . .

Isn't it nice to have access to, and be able to use, other people's things? The best part is you get to enjoy them, and they get to pay for them! lol

Oh how cool! I know ya'll will have fun breaking them in! One of our nephew's in New Jersey just bought one. Now he wants a bigger one. My hubby was wondering if his brother was going to follow suit. He is famous for buying things and losing interest very quickly. He said if he buys one and he loses interest, he is going to go get it. LOL!

The weather is horrible today, it is storming badly over all of north Florida, so unfortunately we couldn't take the wave runners out in the ocean. We'll try again tomorrow, or maybe even next weekend. I love wave runners and jet skis, but I would never want to own one. First, I live inland, the nearest beach is 45 minutes to an hour away. Second, I would probably loose interest in them quickly. Third, I'm willing to bet they are expensive to maintain. And lastly, I wouldn't want to take up space in my garage or in my yard to park them when not in use!

@moffittjc You are right on all of the reasons listed! It's hot here today with heat index at 103 at 1:30. It will rise in the next few hours. We have 1% chance of rain here today. Send some our way. The garden really needs it!

@kareng I wish I could send some rain your way! It's pouring again today, and it looks like the rain is going to be here all day today.

Well, on the face of it, yes, it would be fun. However, I wouldn’t touch them because if something happened I would never be able to replace them, and I know, like me, you’d feel obligated to replace them too. Unlike me, you’re in no danger of ruining them! I hope you have a blast!

@moffittjc Oh yeah, I figured they were insured. I’m just flashing back to borrowing something, and my dog destroying it, which caused me to have to buy a new one. That almost broke my bank, so a deductible would really break me. But I get what you mean. As much as I would be afraid to mess something up, I have friends who have borrowed things, including my car, and I fully trust they’ll take care of it fine. And if something happened, I know they’d take care of it. We don’t really worry about piddly little things in the long run. I like that your friendship is super strong.

@AmbiePam There are too many other things in this world to worry about, other than damaging material goods. I'm glad I chose friends who value other things much more than they value materialistic things.

They're insured, so if something happened to them the insurance would replace them. Of course, I would pay the deductible if it came to that. We've been close friends for over 30 years, so we've been through quite a bit together, and that includes scratching, denting, damaging and wrecking vehicles and toys! lol

One of the things I love about my friends is that, even though they are wealthy, they are not materialistic in the sense that "things" matter to them. If I was to scratch or damage one of the wave runners, he wouldn't get bent out of shape about it. Plus, he knows I would try to make things right. Many years back, I had a brand-new truck that I loaned him so he could haul some antique collectibles he had bought. When he returned my truck, the truck bed was scratched all to hell. I wasn't mad about it. He offered to have it repainted. I told him not to worry about it, scratches in the bed were bound to happen sooner or later.

@moffittjc The fact that he tried to make it right by making the offer, says a lot. It means that while the damage was possible (and you both knew that going in), he took ownership of it and offered to repair the damage.

@kaylachan And I would do the same to him! Even if he wrecked my truck, I wouldn't have asked him to pay anything, although he would voluntarily offered to make things right.

We've all been through a lot together over the past 30 years, we've been through a lot worse than just a few scratches on some toys. We're all very laid back guys who don't get bothered by trivial things such as damage to material goods. We'd be more concerned if it was damage to ourselves!

We've all been through thick 'n thin together, so there is an incredible level of trust. Plus, we all have each other's backs, no matter what. The weather is horrible today, it is storming really badly, so we didn't get to take the wave runners out to the beach. We'll try again tomorrow. And if tomorrow's a bust, we'll always have next weekend for another attempt!
