Got a letter today and it wasn’t very nice. It was from the council telling us that a complaint has been made about rats in our street. Initially annoyed at someone making a complaint against me to the Council, I read the letter more closely and it seems that it’s a more general complaint and not against just me. All the neighbours seem to have received a letter. But I’m not aware of a rodent problem. I’ve not seen any in my house, garden or street, though there is a house down the street. That has lain empty for three years and its garden is wild. The letter also brought to mind the prank letter some of us drew up at university and posted to neighbours. The letter, purportedly from the town Council, noted that the recipients were flushing their toilets too frequently during the hot, summer weather. They were advised to flush no more than 7 times in a 24 hour period, and that failure to comply would result in a heavy fine. Maybe my rat letter is a hoax too?
