For today’s (tonight’s?) “Get Down” song - songs with “get down” in the lyrics - we return to the disco era and the smash disco crossover hit, “Boogie Oogie Oogie” by A Taste of Honey. “Get down, boogie oogie oogie, (repeat three times) get down, boogie!” goes the end of the song - about dancing, as the song title might suggest. It’s a silky smooth disco number, oozing sophistication. The 1978 hit was co-written by vocalist/bassist Janice-Marie Johnson and keyboardist Perry L. Kibble. Fun Fact: “Boogie Oogie Oogie” holds the honor of being the first certified platinum single in the history of Capitol Records. In fact, the album that includes “Boogie Oogie Oogie,” A Taste of Honey, also went platinum. The song also crossed over: in September of 78 it occupied the #1 spot on the Pop, Soul, and Disco charts. And it helped propel the band - also including vocalist/guitarist Hazel Payne and drummer Donald Ray Johnson (no relation to Janice-Marie) - to a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. And am I wrong or does Hazel Payne’s guitar solo have an Ernie Isley feel to it? That’s good stuff!
