I am so spoilt/ lucky!

Maybe spoilt isn’t the right word – after all I have worked to achieve what I have – but at the same time luck also plays a part so I guess I am very lucky. When I wake up in the morning I hear the birds singing outside. Sometimes they are so loud and it’s so early I almost want to shout at them to shut up! And I have a nice garden – admittedly half dead at the moment with the drought – and neighbours who are reasonably friendly and mostly fairly quiet. I just spent the weekend with old friends and although they have a lovely house which is much newer than ours with fancier fittings and much of it newly decorated, and a decent sized garden which could almost be considered quite large by modern standards, they are part of a fairly tightly-packed housing development which means they are surrounded by five neighbours, all of whom have those 6-foot high fences around the gardens, so you can’t actually see them and there isn’t much friendly interaction but you can hear them. When I woke up early in the morning at first it was dead quiet – not a single bird – and then the neighbour’s children started screaming and yelling. It made me feel so, so lucky to live where I do, with birds and trees. But it also really brought home to me that most people don’t have that, in fact the vast majority live in cities with houses all around and don’t even realise that they are missing anything because they’ve probably never even heard birds singing or seen a butterfly or bat. So of course they don’t care about ‘nature’ disappearing because they have never known any anyway, what difference would it make?
