Where Did Our Love Go? - "Gone for Good"

At some point, inevitability finally sinks in. It’s over. So far, in this Where Did Our Love Go? series, the breakup songs have been sort of in the middle of grief, our characters having a hard time coping (sometimes, failing, even.) Today’s edition lands us firmly in acceptance: she ain’t coming back. It took the late Mark Sandman, leader of Cambridge, MA-based Morphine, to acknowledge it with “Gone for Good.” A tender, acoustic ballad from a low-fi trio with a great-big roar, “Gone for Good” finds our character simply coming to terms. Most likely with a bottle and a highball glass at his side. “I’m never going to write you a letter.” “I’m never going to drive by your house, catch you coming outside.” “You’re gone for good.” He’s remembering the simple things, but he gets it. So eloquent, so simple, so sad. And yet so final in its last lyrics: “I’m never going to see you again. You’re gone for good.” Ultimate, total acceptance. It was somehow a fitting end to an album full of raucous tunes about super hotel sex and sharks and road trips. The end of a relationship that’s come to its organic, logical conclusion.
