A Shiny New September

Tomorrow is 9/11. As many memories as there possibly can be of 9/11 I wrote this poem when I was already in Latvia. If I had been in NYC and had worked still I would have been about 2 blocks from the towers and wouldn’t that have worked a job on my anxiety?
Another shiny, new September,
the month that changed lives forever,
with the hand of terror, and it fell into history—
Now September has a new meaning.

Etched forever in our minds and hearts,
the cold grip of fear,
that last look, that last kiss, that last goodbye—
Who knew it would be forever.
*
Gone and lost on a sad sigh,
It takes a lifetime to build something good.
to establish relationships and families—
It takes but one moment to destroy it all.
*
This shiny, new September,
We all will remember,
hand in hand and heart to heart—
together as one, the friends, families and heroes.
*
This shiny, new September,
once again to honor the names and gaze upon the picture images
and with an enduring and everlasting love—
We'll go forth this shiny, new September.
Even though the song “Sweet September” by Tony Christie has nothing to do with 9/11, I enjoy this beautiful song, and it has always reminded me of this day.

@RasmaSandra At home, online with my mother in the room. I had AOL back then, and the homepages showed a picture of a burning tower. We turned on the TV, and a few minutes later we watched live as another plane went through the second tower. At that point, everyone knew it was on purpose, and the United States was under attack.

I can imagine how quickly you wanted to get to your children when you heard what was happening. It must have been an incredibly frightening day for parents.

@jstory07 That makes perfect sense. You just wanted to know they were safe and get them home with you. I am sure that was a frightening journey until you had them safely with you.

That's a lovely poem/tribute, very fitting.
It was a sad day for the world, I remember it so clearly, feeling afraid and wondering what/who/where would that next attack happen.
And then for days, and days, no contrails in the skies from passing jets, it was just so eerie. My heart ached for those who did not have closure or news of missing loved ones, but also for those who had received word and had to begin to rebuild their families and lives.
God bless those surviving. RIP to those who lost their lives.

The silence in the skies must have been especially eerie. Your comment about the families having to wait for news really brings home how much pain and uncertainty so many people went through.

It really is a lovely song. I suppose I will always associate it with September 11 too, even though that was never what the song was about.

I think a lot of people probably did not realise the date was so close until someone mentioned it. It is one of those dates that suddenly brings back so many memories.

That is a really touching poem. I cannot imagine how frightening it would have been to be so close to the towers if you had still been working in New York. Some dates really do carry memories that never seem to fade.
