Firefighters in North Carolina earn a life saving award

Firefighters from the Gaston Fire And Rescue received an award from the North Carolina Association of Rescue & EMS' A. B. Parker Memorial Rescue Of The Year Award at the association meeting on Saturday. Lieutenant Darrick Magee accepted the award on behalf of the firefighters who answered an emergency call on May 14 on Roanoke Rapids Lake when a man cried for help near the dam. The man was around 60 yards away from the shore and drifting the dam when crews used shoreline lighting and drone operations when the crews used a rescue boat to rescue the man who was wearing a life vest and took him to the shore for medical care. The story had a bittersweet ending since one man who was on a kayak who gave the man who was rescued his lifejacket before he drowned after he was separated from his companion.
