Just two more big songs (counting today) in this series. Today, we leave dub reggae behind and set our sights on psychedelic post punk, courtesy of The Cult.
“Big Neon Glitter” is a song from The Cult’s 1985 album, Love. It wasn’t released as a single, only three songs from the album were (“She Sells Sanctuary,” “Rain,” and “Revolution.) Still, Love performed admirably, charting in six countries, certified Gold in two, and was certified Double Platinum in Canada. It faired well due to being a strong album - there is no filler on here. “Big Neon Glitter” is simply one of 10 strong tunes.
The Cult were in a bit of turmoil while recording Love. They fired their drummer for increasingly erratic behavior, bringing in Big Country drummer Mark Brezicki to play on the rest of the album. Of the three songs original drummer Nigel Preston played on, only one, “She Sells Sanctuary,” made it onto the final track listing. The other two had to settle for reissues and “bonus track” status.
Not only had Love performed well, it paved the way for The Cult’s breakthrough with their followup, Sonic Temple.

The Cult were so underappreciated. A band that was both 80s new wave yet hard rock.

Yeah, enough that they were opening for Metallica at Red Rocks. When I saw them, they opened for Aerosmith in Stuttgart.
