Two days in, and we’re already on our second song titled “Electricity” (don’t worry, they aren’t all called that.) Yesterday, it was Elton John’s “Electricity.” Today, we follow the current to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s 1979 single, “Electricity.” “Electricity” was the first single released by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (also known as “O.M.D..) It was written by group leaders Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey when both were 16 years old.) The song was released on the legendary indie label, Factory Records. Factory head honcho Tony Wilson didn’t really care much for the song, but his wife liked it, so he bought the song and put it out as a single. Twice. In fact, “Electricity” has been released as a single four different times. The third time, in 1988, it reached #99 in the U.K. Despite the lack of chart success, the song was a huge influence on synth pop bands such as Depeche Mode, and Book of Love, as well as bands such as Duran Duran and No Doubt. And don’t worry about O.M.D. They had a string of chart success in the 80’s. Things ended up just fine for them. Link is to the official promotional video:
