Lots of exploring to do today, but first let’s go to L.A.! In song, of course, because I’m in the middle of West Virginny right now! That’d be a long car ride.
Here’s a song I’m sure a couple of people were thinking of when I announced the theme this month.
Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.) - Glen Campbell
Here’s a shocker for you: remember that Four Tops song “Ain’t No Woman (Like the One I’ve Got)”? Or the theme from Billy Jack, “One Tin Soldier”? The same songwriter who did those did this one. Dennis Lambert has a pretty good history of hits (and one disaster we won’t mention because this trip’s already full of disasters
).
This was part of Glen Campbell’s big comeback in the mid-70s. By the early 70s he’d been left in the dirt after that sting of “city songs” (“Wichita Lineman” [one of the best songs written, period], “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” [which I never liked]), etc.) And wow, did he ever come back with that massive hit “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Hey, when Carson is spoofing you, you’re popular!
I’ve mentioned that Campbell was a substitute Beach Boy when Brian Wilson was too ill to tour in the 60s. Campbell was also part of L.A.’s famed “Wrecking Crew” group of studio musicians. There was a lot more to Campbell than just the few hits you remember (and the ones you don’t).
Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)
Written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter
Recorded by Glen Campbell
From Rhinestone Cowboy, 1975

He indeed got his feet in LA. His variety show was taped at CBS on the corner of Beverly and Fairfax.

That’s a long way from Delight, Arkansas (where he was born)! He was a very underrated guitarist.

@FourWalls Underrated? I don't think so. Ever since I can remember Campbell was cited as among the best.
