Did anybody think this song wouldn’t be on the list? Anybody at all? As I say, I’m crazy but I’m not stupid.
Yes, it’s the song everyone thinks about when they think of Los Angeles. Here’s today’s L.A. song.
I Love L.A. - Randy Newman
Randy Newman is the king of sarcasm, given that the late, great Tom Lehrer opted to be a mathematics professor instead of staying in music. Despite the fact that this song is played after every Dodgers victory in L.A. and the Chamber of Commerce probably gave Newman a few million dollars to use this in tourism commercials, all is not what it seems.
“Let’s leave Chicago to the Eskimos,” he says in the opening. Dang, ever been to Chicago in the summer???? And with those hot Santa Ana winds and the sun “shinin’ all the time,” it may LOOK “like another perfect day,” but ask the people living there if they’re enjoying the heat wave.
A music critic once said, “If Randy Newman sang ‘God Bless America’ straight you wouldn’t believe him.” That’s true. Newman swears he really does love his hometown; however, even he admitted that the streets he called out in the song weren’t exactly the “best” parts of town.
But that’s what makes him Randy Newman.
And we love it.

I do, too. All those Toy Story movie soundtracks, then he writes something like “Political Science.”

The unofficial anthem of the Lakers. Another song making me sad over what has happened to my home city.
