I’ve written before about songs that have more than one life, in this very series, even. And today’s tune is no exception. Written by vocalist Bob Welch for his first wife, “Sentimental Lady” was first performed by Welch as a member of Fleetwood Mac, when the song was included on the band’s 1972 album, Bare Trees. It was released as a single, but failed to chart. However, you can’t keep a good song down. After leaving Fleetwood Mac, Welch rerecorded the song for his 1977 debut solo album, French Kiss. He received a great amount of help from his former bandmates. Mick Fleetwood played drums on the song, Christine McVie did background vocals, and Welch’s Mac replacement, Lindsey Buckingham, played the guitar (that harpsichord you hear? That’s Buckingham’s guitar, sped up to sound that way.) Buckingham and McVie produced the tune. This time the single fared much better, charting in the Top 10 in all five countries in which it charted. R.I.P., Bob. Link is to the official promotional video:

This is actually saved to my favorites to play on the jukebox at the bar when we go shoot pool.

@thislittlepennyearns - One day after a mountain bike ride, my buddies and I went and had lunch at a pool hall. Full of cowboys at the time. I played "Heroin" by Velvet Underground. Big line formed at the jukebox.

@teamfreak16 Well. I go to a "dive" bar. And we are usually playing pool with a 62 year old man. So I play music that makes him wonder if I time traveled or just have an insane amoutn of music knowledge

This is one I dip into to trace who played where and when. Looked it up on Amazon and they want £95 for it. My copy of Guiness 70s hits was £899. My copies of both are well dog eared.

@teamfreak16 It has been a while since I browsed it. Must dig it out. I still dive into the Guinness 70s

I don’t think I had heard this one although I certainly know who he is.

I like his hit "Ebony Eyes" better, but it doesn't fit this.

I still prefer the FM version. However, I love that French Kiss album. It’s great!

Love the story behind this one, I never knew the first version flopped. That harpsichord sound being a sped up guitar is wild. Glad the song got its second chance, it still sounds so smooth.

The original is a bit different, more acoustic and piano-based.
