Mother In Law Is Not Having a Good Day

We called mother-in-law a few minutes ago to remind her that she has an eye doctor appointment today at 3 pm. She has tear duct stones and needs tear duct surgery but it took us 9 months to get this appointment because there are only two doctors in the entire State of Kentucky that do this. The memory care facility will send a caregiver with her and a driver will take them downtown to the appointment. She first said she didn't remember having an appointment today, but then turned right around and said she couldn't sleep all night for worrying about the appointment today. She is afraid they'll cause her to be blind. She doesn't remember having cataract surgery 5 years ago. She has it in her head that two big men are going to come and get her and shove her into a truck. We don't know why she thinks that. I called the Social Worker at the care facility to go down to MIL's room to reassure her everything's going to be okay. Then MIL started getting upset about the sandals that I took from her room two weeks ago. I took 4 pair of sandals and left her 2 pair and we had this whole conversation with her last Wednesday when we took her to lunch that Summer is over and we're taking them for the Winter and returning them in the Spring. She is now saying that I took all of her house shoes (she has 10-12 pair) (I did NOT take any house shoes) and left her a note saying "You're not getting these back." Obviously I did not leave her any such note. MIL has what we call a "Monday Meltdown" every Monday evening around 6:20 pm. We don't know what it is about Mondays that trigger her. When we told her about the sandals last Wednesday she was okay with it. So the social worker will call us later to let us know how MIL's doctor appointment went. I always include a pink photo with posts about mother-in-law because pink is her favorite color.

I hope her appointment goes well. Who knew tear ducts were such a rarity when it comes to medical issues?

I feel so sorry for her because she's so distraught over both the eye appointment and the shoes. I'm not going to lie, it's frustrating, but I completely understand and don't get upset with her.

Sounds like a really stressful day, and you're handling it with so much patience. Nine months to get that appointment is crazy, I hope it goes smoothly today. Sending you and your mother-in-law good thoughts.

I wanted to say, bless her heart, but you and I read that totally differently when someone says those words. I just feel bad for her, and I know it’s stressful for you all, but I can’t imagine the fear that permeates her mind.
