A guy annoyed me today

Today, my son and I do what we do almost every Wednesday. The church across the street from where I work has a church dinner every Wednesday, and a lot of local restaurants donate food to it. The food is literally restaurant quality since it is being prepared by restaurants. We have been going for the past 5 or so years. My son is fairly popular there among the church staff and volunteers. Everyone loves how polite and kind he is. They love joking with him and talking to him, and we have never really had any problems because the people who serve and those who come to eat are usually fairly nice. Tonight and another night, however, I've been irritated by the same guy. My son does this thing at every church dinner where he stands at the door and opens it for those who are going out while we wait for my husband to pick us up. Most of the older people absolutely love that he does this. We have joked that he's the official, unofficial doorman. He also likes to help open the door for whatever musician plays because they do live music with dinner, and a lot of them have big instruments or equipment they bring in, so my son holds the door open so they can get through. This has never been an issue for anyone there, because most of them love it and love the attention my son gives them by greeting them and opening the door for them. He enjoys being kind to others and making things easier for them, especially those who may be carrying things or using a walker etc. Tonight my son was holding the door as usual, and this full-grown adult came and shoved him out of the way to hold it for his family. This is not the first time he has done it; he's done it one other time. It was rude. My son is almost 16 and was just being nice, and this guy seems not to like my son holding the door for whatever weird reason. My son even apologized to him for being in his way, and I was like, dude, you were not the one in the wrong. I don't get it. I can't fathom what his issue is with my son holding the door open. Is he jealous that my son dared to hold open the door for his girlfriend? My son holds the door open for literally everyone. Does it make him feel less manly that my kid is the one holding the door open? I don't know what his deal is, but he needs to get over it. He pushed my kid out of the way, and my kid was still the one who apologized, and the guy just said, "No problem," like, umm, no sir, YOU need to be the one to apologize. I let it go because it's a church and I don't want to cause problems, but that really rubbed me the wrong way. He's lucky my husband wasn't there to witness it because my husband WOULD have said something, and it probably would have escalated, which I didn't want. My kid would have been mortified, and I didn't want to start something, but it still just hits me the wrong way. What on earth could you possibly have to prove by shoving a teenage boy out of the way? Most people would just say thank you and walk out of the door, not try to show a kid up by holding the door. How immature can you be?

He sounds like a dimwit. Is he clearly lacking intelligence? Even if he was, it wouldn’t excuse him or his behavior, but I’m desperately trying to think a grown man wouldn’t be so hateful as to push him around unless he is low IQ and sees your son as competition. Can you tell if he’s a member of the church or just comes to the dinner, like you and your son? Because if he’s a member of that church I imagine they’d be appalled at his behavior while representing the church. I’m sure they wouldn’t be happy either way, but if it was my church, that behavior would not be tolerated. And as hard as it was for you not to say anything, if it would have embarrassed your son, you did the right thing by remaining silent. The last thing you want to do is upset your son or have an incident at a church. That guy will get what is coming to him.

As far as I can tell, he seems to be of average intelligence, but clearly an idiot in his own right, just not with an IQ issue. He only goes to church for the dinner. I want to say he sat with us last week, and there was something I didn't like about him then that I couldn't put my finger on, and then today happened, and I realized I think he was the one who shoved my son out of the way before. Sometimes church dinners get super packed, and we get random people sitting at our table. Sometimes I enjoy the company of the people, and other times I don't. My son is a lot nicer and more welcoming than I am. I've never turned people away from our table unless we were actually trying to hold a seat for someone, but I've been less than thrilled with a few people who have sat at our table because they seemed rude. My son has never been bothered by them and is friendly towards them, and he was to this guy too, which is why it gets me that this guy did that. He has literally sat at a table with my son and then still did that. This guy has to be at least in his late 20s, if not in his 30s. My son isn't even quite 16 yet. I don't get how he can be remotely threatened by my teenage son, who has been nothing less than friendly. I would be more of a threat than my son. I like people a heck of a lot less than he does, but to be fair, I've had many years on my son of dealing with rude people, and I am now more aware when I meet them. I am never mean, but I am definitely not outgoing with everyone. I know the pastor there, and I don't think she'd appreciate hearing what he did, but I don't want to put anyone there in an awkward position, at least not the people who work and volunteer at the church and not my son, the guy I don't care about.

@sissy15 Your son is more of a man than that tool is. I hope your son continues to be himself. That guy is sure to be a fool in front of other people too.

@AmbiePam My kid didn't even let it bother him. It bothers me more than it did him. He just shrugged it off and kept on with his day. I am sure he is a fool in front of others and is probably too stupid to realize it. I really wish others from the church had seen that and said something so I wouldn't have to be the one in that situation. I don't want to be the one to embarrass my son but I feel like it would be less embarrassing coming from someone else there.

I have noticed through the years in all types of groups of people, there is always a bad apple in every group.

I agree. There are still a lot of nice people there, but you always have to have at least one.

Just make sure your son is safe from that person.

I don't think the guy is a serious threat to my son, just rude.

That's really frustrating, and your son sounds like such a sweet kid. Shoving a teenager out of the way just to hold a door is a weird thing to do, especially at church. You handled it well by letting it go, and honestly he should be proud of how kind he is.
