Does anyone remember Thrifty Drug Stores, a major chain for decades until bought out and replaced by Rite Aid? I watched a documentary about Thrifty’s who was famously known for its ice cream. As a kid, it was a treat going to Thrifty’s for a trademark sugar cone whose nickel scoops were uniquely cylinder shaped.
Thrifty’s founder had an inspiration. Ice cream as a lure to get customers into stores. He bought an ice cream plant to manufacture Thrifty’s own brand with flavors he developed. The ploy succeeded. Even though cones were sold at a loss, the ice cream proved very popular in bringing in customers who spent elsewhere in the store.
Once the stores were gone, all that remained was the ice cream. Thrifty’s name and logo, the plant and flavor recipes were bought and manufacturing continued and product sold in supermarkets.
I had to try Thrifty’s and selected it most famous flavor chocolate malted crunch. I didn’t think it was great. Mediocre at best. Too used to deep flavored richly textured Haagen-Dazs chocolate while Thrifty’s flavor bland and weak. You know how chocolate malt balls candies are crunchy? The liberally studded tiny malt balls are somewhat soggy and not all that crunchy. Also didn’t care for the chocolate and malt flavor combination and will not get this again.

I have heard of it. But, I don't think there was one where I lived.

Given that RIte Aid is out of business and Thrifty’s isn’t east of the Mississippi (i don’t remember seeing any in Utah or Arizona last year), it would stand to reason that their ice cream isn’t earth-shattering.

Yes! We had a Thrifty at the shopping center near us. Though I've seen it, I've never tried the Thrifty's ice cream in the box.

Yes I remember Thrifty's, those cylinder shaped scoops were such a fun treat as a kid. Funny how a nickel cone was really just a trick to get people in the store. Sorry the chocolate malted crunch didn't work for you, sounds like the nostalgia hit harder than the flavor.
