Why Is There So Much Needless Excessive Money Spent on Sports Championship Rings?

There was a story today in the online news about championship rings for a certain team in a certain sport. I don't remember the exact details. But here's what got me: They spend $3.7 million dollars for 22 carat championship rings when the team wins a championship. The rings go to players, coaches, and employees. They make 275 rings. If I'm doing my math right, that's $13,454 per ring. I kinda get that the athletes and support people who won should be rewarded, but don't professional basketball players already make an average of $12.4 million per year? (Alexa told me that). So couldn't that $3.7 million be spent to house or feed the homeless or shelter abused women or take care of abandoned animals or something more important than $13,000 rings? I know they have the right to them. But there's such a huge divide between those who have and those who have not.

Why is so much money lavished on sports period? For years we have listened to people scream about the wealthy and they are bad and need to be taxed more etc and yet zillionaire athletes some with rings like these are treated as untouchable gods and heroes. Think of you will of Musk, he doesn't play a child's game and actually does something.

I don't want to be a rich-person hater because they can do whatever they want with their money, but in what world does a basketball player make $12m/yr and a police officer makes $70k/yr? And I'm also not trying to be a sports-hater, because I really it probably creates a lot of jobs including concession stand workers, uniform makers, etc., - but do you realize how much money the totality of sports consumes? We could end our national debt and have enough surplus for thousands of years with all of the money that's spent on sports in just one year.

@LooeyVille I agree with you. A minimum wage player in baseball will earn more in one year that a first responder will in their entire working life. I am just sick of the hypocrisy of people cursing the wealthy then complaining about "affordability" yet happily shelling out $100s for a concert seat.

The rings for employees are not the same as the rings for players. The ones for athletes are the most lavish. Why is that being spent? Because it rakes in billions of dollars so it’s a drop in the bucket to have them being made. That being said, billions are also given to charity from these sports. Then add in the millions given by the athletes themselves, not just the teams and organization. How much do you want them to give to the homeless? Hollywood stars make even more money, and unlike athletes they don’t put their future health on the line. So how much of their ridiculous jewelry should we sell? How many vacations of the stars should we take away? Don’t get me wrong, the cost for these gaudy rings is ridiculous. And a lot of these athletes end up selling them. But I don’t know how far we should go on telling other people on how to spend their money. At whose tax bracket do we stop?

I can’t solve the whole world’s problems and not everybody can be equal. There will be inequities in the world. This was just an observation. Of course we could expand this to many many other areas.

@looeyville There are so many unnecessarily expensive trinkets given out in sport and showbiz. Vanity of vanities.

That is quite bizarre. How often do these championships happen? I mean is a team likely to win more than one? Because surely you wouldn't want a whole handful of those rings would you?? That whole thing seems odd to me, never mind how much is spent on them. But yes of course the money could be spent on more worthwhile things - the same is true of many sports-related things, as well as fashion and other useless systems. On something of a tangent, what are the knicks? Here we would use knicks as short for knickers, in other words women's underwear. "Go knickers!"

No one feels for homeless and poors. Countries are in race to subjugate other countries without realise the difficulties of their own people.

Thirteen grand per ring just for jewelry is hard to wrap my head around... That money could have fed a lot of families, i think. Imo the math you did makes it feel even crazier,..
