Crazy woman number 3. This film is based on the novel by Stephen King. Kathy Bates did such a good job in scaring the heck out of me and everyone who watched this film that she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and this is the only film based on a King novel to win an Academy Award. “Misery” came out in 1990 and is an American psychological horror thriller. The story revolves around Paul Sheldon, played by James Caan, who became a famed novelist and best-known for writing Victorian romance novels featuring a character named Misery Chastain. He chooses to end this kind of writing and turn to more serious literature. The author has been staying at a cabin in Silver Creek, Colorado, to complete his new manuscript, which is being eagerly awaited by his literary agent, played by one of my favorite Hollywood actresses, Lauren Bacall. On this way back to NYC during a blizzard, Paul Sheldon crashes his Mustang going over an embankment. Driving along Annie Wilkes, a former nurse, sees the accident and rescues him, taking him to her isolated farmhouse. Paul wakes up, and she has splinted his broken legs and is giving him pain pills. She is glad to have rescued her favorite author and is looking forward to reading his latest Victorian romance novel. Suddenly things change; Annie realizes that the novel she just read is the last in the Misery Chastain series and her favorite character has been killed off. Heck, this is a tragedy to her; she even has a big fat pet pig named Misery. Annie changes to a raving mad fan and confronts Paul with how angry she is that he chose to do this and the poor author becomes terrorized by this crazy, obsessed woman and believe me, from this point on the film will scare the wits out of you.
