Trick or Treating

We've all seen them. Either on the porch at our own home, or out on the streets.
It is the costume-clad children going out trick or treating for Halloween.
The young and the shy ones are always the most adorable in my mind. And the children, who go out with their siblings all dressed in costumes with a theme. I love those. One year the twins went out as Dalmatian puppies, and their parents went out as dog catchers, another year the babies, who were not even walking yet, were dressed as bumble bees, and their parents as bee keepers. That was appropriately done.
And I've seen the teenagers wearing a safety vest and a mask, which have nothing in common between the two trick or treating, or wearing a sports (hockey) jersey.
We give those big kids a sucker.
But seriously, have you given it any thought to the age when children should stop dressing up to go out trick or treating? I understand the eldest of a family dressing up to accompany and help younger siblings, but probably not for personal gain. What say you?

Halloween and trick or treating is something we normally don't do here. But usually shopping malls would require their tenants to prepare candies on halloween for a trick or treat event. So young children would visit in their halloween costumes and enter the different stores.
But it's not as fun as the way you do it there.

@Juliaacv It's fun for the small kids for sure. But the thing is, there's just an allotted time for each store to give out candies. And they don't really prepare much at all.
My son who's now 22, did it when he was 5 years old. He did it only once.

When I lived with my parents, and handed out the candy, one year we got our fifteen year old neighbor and her friends. They didn’t even bother with a costume; they just got a bucket and said trick or treat. I made a face and gave them candy, but it was pretty lame. If I had kids, I’d lull the plug of going to door for candy at the age of thirteen. And thirteen is probably one year longer than it should be.
We didn’t do trick or treat because of the neighborhood we lived in, so our church would just have a harvest festival. We’d play games and get candy there, and if you happened to be a teenager it didn’t seem weird to get candy at an event like that.

When I was a preteen I always went to a party at the church with my cousins, and then we'd have a sleep over. It was so much fun, much more than trick or treating.
And the treats were often homemade, like carmel apples and popcorn balls, I miss those days.
Trick or treating when you grew up on a farm consisted of your mother driving you up and down the concession roads, and it being quite a time from one door to the next.
When we hosted a Halloween party for Jonathon and his friends, we held it in our basement, and sat chairs back to back for them all and had them seated but not able to use their hands, and had cinnamon donuts tied to a string hanging from the ceiling tiles in front of each seat. The object of the gave was to see who would eat the most of the donut, without it falling off of the string unless it went into their mouth.
It was our dry spin on bobbing for apples. It was hilarious to watch. I did up a huge canning pot of spaghetti pasta with some ketchup (to look like blood) and they were all given disposable gloves to find something in the worms as we called them. It was a bit of a quick little scavenger hunt.

I encourage them to enjoy trick or treating. There is worse things they could be doing and even teenagers enjoy candy

I gave up trick or treating when I went to junior high school.

We don't have jr. high school here, but we suggested to our son, when he was 11 years old, that he have a Halloween party (supervised of course) and have all of his friends in.
It was alot of fun, and none of the kids missed out on any candy, they made out like bandits at our place as we had games set up for them with prizes to win and everyone got a Halloween treat bag.

I can't recall when I stopped. I don't believed I abused it when looking "too old." These days anyone can trick or treat at mall parties and stuff.

Exactly, and going to public places is, in my opinion, much more age appropriate than going out door to door.
When our son was 11 years old, we suggested that we allow him to have a cool Halloween party, and forgo trick or treating. All of the guys he still hangs with, were at that party, along with others and some girls, and they all had alot of fun, and made out like bandits as I had some really cool prizes for the pumpkin ring toss, and the many other games we played, as well I sent home grab bags with full size candy bars and some coupons for Mc'Donalds and such.
