2024 Gershwin Prize Tribute to Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Four Walls will be happy I’m finally including Elton John in a series even if he isn’t singing. The kings of heavy metal and EJ have formed an unlikely mutual admiration society. EJ covered “Nothing Else Matters” calling it one of the greatest songs ever. Setting is unusual. Metallica goes on stage before an audience looking like them belong at the ballet. The reaction? At the end you can reading EJ mouthing “Amazing.”
Somehow Metallica turned EJ/Taupin into a heavy metal masterpiece. Everything is perfectly executed. What makes this performance memorable is the band playing with joy especially lead singer James Hetfield. Metallica is really into it giving that something extra. Even if you aren’t a Metallica fan, you might get into this.
