I throw a lot of genres around here because I post music from a lot of genres. But I’ve been listening to this particular band since the 80’s, and I’ve never heard of their self-described genre until tonight.
Emotio-electro.
The System was an R&B/synth pop duo (keyboardist David Frank and vocalist Mic Murphy) from New York. They came up with their emotio-electro description due to their combination of catchy, sophisticated synthesizer work and emotionally-sensitive lyrics.
“Don’t Disturb This Groove” was the title track from the duo’s 1987 album. Both the band’s manager and record company were against using the song as the album’s first single, but the fellows stood their ground and finally got their way.
The single reached #1 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart, where it spent a week. You can't keep a great song down, however. The tune then crossed over into the mainstream, peaking at #4 on the Hot 100.
What can I say, it’s one of my favorite 80’s jams.

You might have heard Robert Palmer's cover of their hit "You Are in My System." It was great. Both versions, actually.

Usually, managers and record companies just need to get out of the way.
