According to the FDA, aspartame is safe.
Below is just a small copy and paste about what is said about it.
The question is, what do you believe. There is a lot of misinformation out there. And that is why we have departments like the FDA to check these things for us.
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/qa-adf9.html
After reviewing scientific studies, FDA determined in 1981 that aspartame was safe for use in foods. In 1987, the General Accounting Office investigated the process surrounding FDA's approval of aspartame and confirmed the agency had acted properly. However, FDA has continued to review complaints alleging adverse reactions to products containing aspartame. To date, FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems.
Carefully controlled clinical studies show that aspartame is not an allergen. However, certain people with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU), and pregnant women with hyperphenylalanine (high levels of phenylalanine in blood) have a problem with aspartame because they do not effectively metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine, one of aspartame's components. High levels of this amino acid in body fluids can cause brain damage. Therefore, FDA has ruled that all products containing aspartame must include a warning to phenylketonurics that the sweetener contains phenylalanine.

Now... People say its safe and all that said about the dangers is a myth I do not believe it is a myth. I recieve serious headaches, and anxiety attacks within an hour of drinking or eating anything with aspartame.. So I side with the side that says it is dangerous. I have also had seizure like reactions to it..
This is what the site saying that are Myths says. It may not cause those diseases but it definately causes similar symptoms in some people. The Aspartame maybe reacting with other things too. Like a person's meds, or caffiene, or antidepressants...

Now most of what is listed here..
I have experienced myself from Aspartame I am known to be very very sensitive to most meds and chemicals so that maybe part of it it as well, When I take medicines I take the childrens dose or 1/4 the usual dose that shows you how sensitive I am.

I hope this helps give a little more information on both sides, and I had been through Genetic testing I do not have PKU...
So that rules out why Aspartame would effect me..

There's a book out there about it. I read a small excerpt and it talked about how this lady had used one of those sweetners with that stuff in it and she ended up in the mergency room. She had never tried it until that day. She had it with her coffee. Ever since then, I've used regular sugar or cane sugar.
