I don't know if it's the "best" way to learn, but I teach the notes of the first 4 frets first, then start teaching chords. After that I map the whole fretboard out with the student. I teach tabs and staffs also. I don't teach songs though. I figure that if you can read the notes, chords and tabs, you can play pretty much any song you want.

I went to the Internet Tab Academy of Guitar also. I learned a long time ago how much better I would be if I had a teacher. So now, I am one. ;~D You're right about tabs. They are great, as long as you know the song. I've also noticed that they are really only good for getting you started, since most posted tabs aren't all that accurate. Of course, there is a lot of fun in taking the tab and fixing it how you would rather play it. Another fun thing is to adapt them to your own style. I have an adaptation of Stairway to Heaven on acoustical that is more fun to play (at least for me) than sticking to Jimmy Page's original... but his is awesome! 40 isn't too late. If you have the time and money, nothing should stop you from improving your art.

I have the most trouble with chords. I can play them easily if the notes are there on the page for the chords. But if it just has the letters, I'm totally lost. It takes me way too long to remember which chord is what. It will probably just take time for memorization I suppose. I kind of wish I had more time for music. Lately I don't have enough time.

Piggles, find an online chart of the major chords (they are ALL OVER the net). Find three chords that you know. For 3 minutes a day, play nothing but those three chords. Say the chords outloud as you make the changes. Soon you will find that you aren't even thinking of where your fingers are going anymore. Seeing a "C" will automatically put your fingers where they belong. After you get to that point (or to the point where if you see those three letters again, someone is going to die... pick three more). ;~D

Hi.I play guitar from 2 years and the first thing to improve your skills is the passion for it and patience. You never think "i'd like to play like Satriani or any other great guitarist from a day to another". So begin with simple things and the progress will arrive. If you try to play difficult songs initially you probably receive stress by the instrument and not pleasure. So take a look to the free lesson on line for beginners and buy something for beginners. Another important thing is the costance.Play it everyday and not 10 hours a day and 0 hours for the next 3 days.1 hours everyday is better than 10 hours every 10 days. Finally play it with you friends and try to do some song togheter...this will help you to play in group. So good look and welcome to this great LIFESTYLE

I learned to play guitar at college. There are many great classes you can take to help you start out the right way. Once you get started, you can learn on your own as well.
