Value of Education

Remember it takes a degree to fly a plane but only a high school diploma to fix one. Reassurance for those of us who fly routinely in our jobs.
After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.
Never let it be said ground crews lack a sense of humour. Here are some of the actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S ) by maintenance engineers.
P: Left inside main tyre almost needs replacing.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tyre.
P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.
P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.
P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.
P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.
P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.
P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.
P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.
P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.
P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.
P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. It sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.
Hope that you enjoy this dose of good old Aussie humour.

What a wonderful way to restart my day at myLot. At first sight I didn't get the point of a "Discussion" but after reading it I was laffing and really enjoying it. Sorry I don't have a comeback....I do agree, however, the Aussies have a very good sense of humor. I loved Crocodile Dundee movies that were rather insane but they made me laff. Can't remember all the Aussie TV series I have watched but I do remember that sometimes they had comical passages that would tend to cheer one up. Thanks for the discussion. Keep em coming and I will respond.

ossi. got to apologize...forgot to comment on the question at hand. I feel that learning and education go hand in hand. We are learning with every breath we take...it's up to us to separate the wheat from the chaff and file the tidbits in their respective folders when sometime in the future we can cut and paste as the moment warrants.

That's another funny one, Aussie. I thought I responded to this but I can't find it so If I am repeating, forgive me. That is really funny but it is also a sobering thought also. You just hope when you get on those planes that the mechanic checked it out better than the ones you wrote about. LOL

I am pleased that you read and enjoyed this caribe. I think that we are okay with our airline, as QANTAS is the only airline that has not "lost" an plane due to an accident. They have a brilliant track record actually, for which they can be very proud.

Thanks for reading and responding to this sweetie88. I was pleased to read that your Government is taking steps to improve the literacy rate in your country. It is education that helps nations develop, because if the population are educated then can contribute more. Let's both hope that they continue to encourage people to learn to read and write. :)

I am pleased that you read and enjoyed this deebomb. For me it has that little bit extra because I am an Australia, QANTAS is an Australian airline and it given a choice the only airline our son will fly with when on his overseas jaunts.
Thanks for responding deebomb. :)

From the time we are born we learn. We learn how to walk, eat and talk. We learn how to understand when people are happy or sad. A lot of what we learn needs to be taught to us by other people. What we learn is important to how we live our lives. Doctors can only help us when we are sick because they have been taught what to do when people are sick.
As long as what we are being taught is true and we use what we have learnt, education improves our lives and the lives of those we come into contact with.

You know there is no value to education. Anything and everything can be robbed from the person but one cannot robbed education one had.

On a flight James bond was sitting next to a Telugu guy.
Telugu Guy: "Hello, May I know your name please?"
James Bond: "My name is Bond" Continuing in his inimitable style,
"......James Bond."
Then Bond asks: "And you?"
Telugu Guy: "My name is Rao...
Siva Rao...
Samba Siva Rao...
Venkata Samba Siva Rao...
Yarlagadda Venkata Samba Siva Rao...
Rajasekhara Yarlagadda Venkata Samba Siva Rao...
Sitaramanjaneyula Rajasekhara Yarlagadda Venkata Samba Siva Rao...
Vijayawada Sitaramanjaneyula Rajasekhara Yarlagadda Venkata Samba
Siva Rao..."
Since then when anyone asks Bond his name he simply says "James
Bond"

When meeting people unlike yourself, you broaden your own horizons by seeing that people think and act differently - sometimes for good reasons. You expand your own ability to think and see different options at solving a problem.
People who have good self-esteem want to challenge their
way(s) of thinking. Challenging yourselves with people who think differently forces us to clarify our own thoughts. For those pedagogical folks it is meta-cognition at its best! And if questioning your own thought process makes you cringe, you are saying you are no longer open to learning.
We say we want our students to be better at critical thinking. This is great training for critical thinking for children and adults alike! And I haven't even begin to address the sociological benefits...
