Should College Students work?

Heres the story, I have just finished my associte degree and am starting work on my Bacholars. I had to quit my retail job because I was not makeing enough money to pay my rent and bills. I have now moved in with mom. My problem is I have been told by most employers that I can not work and go to school at the same time. (the only ones that have not are retail and fast food) unforutunatly they don't pay enough for me to be on my own, which I have to be to finish my degree. Personaly I feel that an employer should not be able to not hire me because I am a student, I am a hard worker and I have time to finish school, if it takes me longer then 2 years because I needed more time to work, fine. So I am wondering what other people think of this, should college students work and go to school or should they take out loans to pay for everything?

I am a college student pursuing my BA and I work full time and attend school full time. It is hard work, but U don't have the option of living with my parents or getting money from them to go to school. I have to pay for everything myself, so this is the only way for me. Although it is hard I think it has helped me become more responsible and it has given me a fantastic resume as I work in the field I am studying.

That is the problem I have, my parents can not pay for anything and I am going to have to move next month to go to school (I'm not driving 2 hours everyday to class, I don't have the money) So I'm trying to find work, it is very hard when they tell you they won't hire you because your in school though.

For me, it depends on the situation. To make stuff simple: if cash is low but you can still survive, don't work; if cash is low and you can't survive, work; if cash is high, don't work. With regards to your problem, I'd say finish your studies and get a higher paying job. I personally hate being underemployed. You become unhappy with your job, and that usually affects your output. Some people I know quit studying just because they've had a taste of what they could get after they finish school. I would ask you: "would you prefer the taste of the cake or the whole thing?" I just hope that your mom understands. (^_^)

You have a good point, If I didn't have to work I would probably just wait, one because I would work harder in school and two because I could get it done faster not working. I just cant understand why an employer would tell a student they cant work and go to school. It seems like they would want someone who is that motivated. but maybe they see it another way.

I'll have to say, if you're in college/university and you can't make ends meet, find yourself a companion - either to pay half of the rent as a housemate, or to live with. if you can get in a mutually-beneficial relationship, even if it's not like the love of your life or something, I think that's your best option. Nobody should try to get through life alone - it's lonely and it's more difficult overall. Best of luck to you, by the way, however you make it work :).

it depends, if a student is capable to finance his studies, then, he need not to work to be able to focus more on his lesson to get higher grades. but if a person is not financially capable, well i guess its just logical for him/her to work if ever he/she want to finish college.

It just plus point for me. Im students and im work. I think that was normal, you know in life we need money to survive. if your family can't pay for your school then why yoou not get a job to pay it your own. if you can make extra money then it will good, you just started learn to get success in your life. dont be sad with that. :)

Yes its very tough to manage both studies and job aprt time or full time at a time. ne cannot concentrate on both and it effects both but its complusion for some students by considering thier financial situation. Usually thsi happens with students studying in usa,uk,australia etc... they have to work and study. But the eduction system is good. They have only a 5 day a week so the other 2 days can be used to work and earn money instead spending ina beach or going to discotheque. The university people also offer some on campus jobs which are allowed to do in working hours only also the university offers fee waivers for bright students. This may also help them.... I didnt worked and studied at a time till now and hope i willnot face such horrible situation./.....

I think they should only work if they need money. that time is more important for studies so pay more attention towards studies. if work is needed then college degree must have made it.
