I think in contains whatever you want it to be. In movie terms it is a "MacGuffin" Which is a plot device...that is used to continue the story and motivate characters in the movie. Tarantino said that the case was originally supposed to contain diamonds that were stolen in Resovoir dogs.

Good point. I think that's most probable explanation to that briefcase.

John Travolta is my favourite champ so i liked the movie. Well Regarding the Briefcase i am not sure but i feel it was gold inside at whenever it was shown as opened some kind of gold light used to come. Great Movie I have DVD of it.!! Enjoy

Maybe it was the soul of Marsellus Wallace (crime boss)? Thought it must be something supernatural! :)

It was either gold or some kind of valuable jewels, because when it was opened in the diner & pumpkin opened the case he said it was beautiful.

Pulp fiction was such a strange movie I couldn't tell what was going on most of the time. My husband loved it but when the movie ended I sat there with a stunned look on my face wondering what the heck the movie was supposed to be about. It is beyond me what could have been in the briefcase!

My husband and I just watched this movie (for like the tenth time) and we both asked each other what was in the briefcase. Neither one of us knew. Do you? I have my suspicions on what it could have been but I am not sure.

I think the briefcase contained Gold or something (probably a body part or weapon) made of gold. I think Pulp Fiction was not a movie but a cult in itself.
