I am having a problem with the people building the house next door. HELP

United States
December 4, 2006 1:59pm CST
Since they have been building the house next door my water bill has gone from $36 a month to $108 a month. I was just in the kitchen washing dishes and seen the builders come over with buckets (mine that have gone missing) and fill them at my water tap. They ran the water lines for that house from my water meter and across my front yard. Now when I go out to check my mail I sink in the mud (it stays muddy). How do i nicely tell the builders they have caused my water bill to go up like that and they need to fix it? Please Help!!!

I would take them the bills and show them how your water bill has gone up and ask them to pay it and ask them who gave them permission to use your water

I would call the water company...it's not your problem...maybe they don't even have permission to be doing that...when you start construction you need licenses from different companies...so if they are causing your water to be higher then you do have a problem and you should have them take care of the bill....but you have to remember you can't just go up the the construction workers you have to talk to the person in charge.....BUt if I were you I would make a complaint with the water company...for all you know they can be doing illegal construction!

You may have to file a complain to the police department for stealing water.

You should go over to the site and look at the building permit. On the permit there is a permit number and a phone number that you can call if they are in violation of their permit. Take both numbers down and call immediately.

In USA it is considered stealing if they do not have the permission of the property owner. If you are the property owner try to get some video of them filling up with your buckets and take your previous bill from before hey were building and then after and show all of this to the police and file a grievance. If you are not the owner, contact the owner and see if they gave permission. If they did not let them know about this problem and if they did talk to them about a refund in the difference.... Someone owes you money for this.

Video would be good. Even a camera snap some pics of them in your yard filling things up. Call the water company also, I wouldn't say anything to them, would just call and report them.

If they give you trouble, talk to a lawyer or Legal Aid. That should technically be trespassing and theft. They have no right to do anything like that.

yeah, try to find a good lawyer to help you, if they do not listen to you.

I had this situation happen to me, however I was not a homeowner...I was renting. This happened in some new duplexes that were in the middle of being built. We were the first to move in and everything was great, until I too saw the buckets and heard water running from my building. Needless to say my bill was outrageous. The next time I saw them coming to my house with those buckets, I kindly went outside and explained to them about my bill and how I was the one having to pay for that. They were very nice to me about it and stopped. I also called the LandLord and explained the situation to them. Just remember to keep your cool and it will work out okay. If you loose it with them, they won't care and they will keep doing it...trust me.

Yes I agree, she has to demand for the water charges they used. Besides she may demand extra for causing her water bill escalating to newer & higher slab. Due to this next month she may receive extra slab bill. Keep it fair deal, If it necessary make it written so that it will be helpful in future also.

My parents recently built a house and were using the neighbours water and hydro, they didn't even have to be asked to pay for it they just automatically went over with some money, it's just the decent thing to do. I would just simply go over there and be polite about it and explain the billing situation..

What I would suggest is you should take your previous bills and your current bill and you should talk to them that you are having high water bills. You should talk to them in a nice way. Most time I think when people tell say in nice way without aggresiviness or shouting most people understands. Try to make some solution like either making them pay the extra waterbill or ask them to arrange for alternate for water. Best of luck

There isn't really a nice way to say you owe me money. I would definitly, without being rude, let them know though. They probably already do and are hoping you just won't know what happened.

I'd march right out there and grab the buckets -they are yours -and the bill and call public utilities and have them come down and have a look at it-- bring your past bills with you so you can prove that your water consumption isin't that great and have them go over the meter itself -because if the builder's are tapping in-thats illegal

They should be working with a permit. Call the police as this is a violation of the permit plus it is as good as theft since it costs money. Let the police handle it.

I called the water compant and they said call the cops. I called the Sheriff's department and was told to call a lawyer. I looked and there is no permit that can be seen.

You need to call the water board ASAP and get them out there to see it. I do believe that is against the law. And the water board would be the one to write fines for it I believe. At least call the water company that sends you your bills and complain, so they can come and look at it and hopefully get things straightened out. If they catch them in the act you might be able to recoup some of the money.

Someone else said something about video. If possible before you say anything try take pictures of them in your yard and the mess it has created in your yard.

Nicely? Excuse me but reputable builders would have asked permission and offered to pay the difference. Tell them that 1. your buckets weren't available for their use. 2. They can either cease using your water or they can pay for it. 3. Tell them that you expect your yard to be returned to the state it was in before they started the project. 4. Tell them you expect to have at least a plank walkway placed across your yard for both your use and theirs if they comply with the first three items. And lastly, if they do not comply file a small claim against them. What they are doing exceeds the bound of ethical business practices. As a home owner you have rights, exercise them.

We had the same problem. Excuse me, confront the construction manager! They (the builders) will hook up hoses to your water spickets and use the water if you don't watch them. They will use your water hoses, etc. You need to make the builder pay for the water

You tell the water authorities and sanitation authorities. they will set right the things. Also give a Police complaint that you are being cheated by the builders.

I agree with what everyone else said. Talk to the foreman, show him your bills, and ask them to cover your cost. If they give you any trouble, file a tresspassing complaint. They cannot just come onto your property without permission and use your things or resources.

To be honest they are stealing your water so why be polite about it seek somelegal advice straight away before these guys finsh and dissapear Why in the hell should you pay for someone else to use your water did they have permision from YOU to run the water lines across your front yard as if not then you could do them for damaging your property also as you now have a muddy mess instead of your garden :p

First turn off the water to the outside tap, next contact the builders main office and report the theft of the water to a supervisor, and then send him a bill for the water that they have taken. They might not pay the bill, but at least they won't be able to get free water anymore.
