My 1 year old has started to throw temper tantrums. What should I do to defuse the situation, especially out in public?

In my opinion, the best way to deal with a temper tantrum is to ignore it (making sure the child doesn't harm himself in the process, of course). A response only encourages the behavior. But in public, you can't allow your child to carry on and disturb others, so the best thing to do is just to take them to your vehicle or a secluded place until they calm down. I realize this can be a big inconvenience if you are in the middle of shopping or such, but who said parenting was convenient?

Put oragel on his tongue, or any other form of teething gel. It tastes awful and when their mouth goes numb they don't want to talk.

There's not really a lot you can do when it comes to Temper Tantrums. When they are in that tantrum mode they dont want to listen to reason. Ive found that the best thing that works is ignoring them completely. If out in public then I will first ask them if they want to go out and sit in the car and then if they still continue to throw their fit I will take them out in the car until they calm down!
