Ignition meltdown, idle and misfire trouble

I have a 88 Oldsmobile eighty-eight and have changed plug wires, plugs, coil-pack, ignition control module, air cleaner, vacuum hoses, and catylitic converter that was plugged. I have observed that the ignition module that I took off the car was melting inside...my car has an intake backfire but will drive wonderful after you get it in gear and on the road at high speeds...IF you can get the car to move without dying. The car dies immediately and the brakes are not working unless the engine is revved up real high. Please help.
