please help me with my electronic guitar tuner, thankyou!

when i play the 1st string, instead of it saying eg. 1E, it is saying 4G... i just bought the electronic tuner yesterday and it was recommended as 1 of the best!!! I am so confused. How can i get it to say the correct string number and letter???
