Why is AIDS symbolized by a red ribbon?

I think it has something to do with the blood color, but I'm not really sure about that.

I have always believed that it has something to do with blood and love. Many years ago people wore buttons or pins to denote their support for something special but now the tendency is to have ribbons instead.
The ribbons are cheaper, less obtrusive and people know what the ribbon stands for when they see it, whereas with a button or pin you have to get up close to the person wearing it to know what they are supporting. I personally prefer the ribbons, unless of course it is for an organisation that has long been known for a certain shape and their button/pin is always the same.
The image is to show that both black and white people suffer from AIDS and together we should try to find a cure for it.
