Poor = Stupid

Why do people equate poor and stupid? Just because I don't have as much money as you, doesn't mean I don't understand the words you are saying. I just got off the phone with a doctor's office which I was told to call. The people referring me are a clinic that helps folks who work but have no insurance and don't make a ton of money. So, basically I'm working poor at the moment. The office I was calling however is a standard office and the financial officer felt like she had to explain to me that they HAVE to get paid in order to be able to pay their staff and bills. I felt like being sarcastic "Really? No kidding? Are you serious, that you need money in order to survive? I hadn't noticed."

i guess people think that if you're poor you cant afford a good education or that you wouldn't be in your current state if you were smart. that is just ignorant thinking..the two might be related in some cases to an extent, but there is not a direct correlation between poverty and stupidity.

I have a higher education and can predict the intricacies of the stock market on a regular basis. If I had any kind of capital to start with I wouldn't be in this situation, but the fact is some folks are born poor and we struggle our whole lives to break the patterns that hold us down. It just bothers me to be spoken to like I'm a moron just because I have no insurance currently.

True, I know tons of underqualified incompetent people who still bring in big money. At the same time I also know a few highly intelligent people who make very little money.

I think sometimes (in my more cynical phases) the smarter you are, the less money you make.

The most intelligent people are aware that wealth has nothing to do with how smart a person is. So, what does that make the people who don't seem to know this?

True, true. It makes me feel better knowing there are people out there that have the good sense to remember this.

Because being poor is often labeled as a reason for being un-educated. Of being stupid. Which is not in reality.

Even the poor can educate themselves should they have the initiative. I went to college on full scholarship. Granted I couldn't afford to go to MIT, but I did still go to college and learned a lot more outside the classroom than I ever could have inside one.

Hehe, the funny part is: they were supposed to call back and give me an answer as to whether I could get services or not. They didn't even bother to call back.

No, I am going to try going to a different clinic instead. I honestly don't need to be treated like that even if they give me medical attention. There are options out there.

Life will be better again soon. It goes in cycles. The lady who doesn't understand that not having money doesn't mean I don't know how to pay bills, will meet difficult times before too much longer.

Sterotyping, it really does harm everyone. The rich and well to do look down on the middle class as if we were the "doo" on their shoe. Don't they understand that the average american are the backbone of this country? They get the tax breaks and "spiffs" just because they have money. They need it the least. I think people feel that poor leads to uneducated. Uneducated leads to lesser jobs, which leads to less money, the circle goes on and on. They ran a special on scholarships to our leading colleges. Did you know that rich kids get in even if they have bad grades, and are just party animals? Smart kids without resources get turned away. It is sad.

Actually, I did know that. I was accepted at a VERY prestigious college but had to turn it down because I could not get enough financial aid to attend.

It doesn't bother me that someone has more money than I do. It just bothers me when they assume I am stupid because I do not have as much as they do.

Most smart people can make better money by sing their brains...why are the pooer people the ones who live in poverty & crank out baby after baby, just to get the welfare? It is becuase they weren't smart enough to keep their knees closed in HS & learn how to get out of where they are currently. smart=money in 99.9% of the time

Wow! You really have a lot to learn about how the world works. I very much doubt the great philosophers and poets were rich.

Hate to hear you were treated like that. I use to be the financial magager at a dental office. I know everyone falls on hard times or just has a career that pays nearly enough to survive. But when you are in need of medical attention I think the staff that you deal with should show compasion and have a carring attitude. And the fact that you may get assistance does not mean your poor-just that society, ecomnomics, and job benefits sux... Just get the help you need and afterwards let the upper management know that you were treated poorly. It is amazing what employees get away with.. If you notify the employer this kind of treatment may stop. I hate to offend patients and try my best to work with them. Good Luck

Intelligence, caring, and wealth are three totally different subjects and it frustrates me that they are so often tangled together.

I feel with you on this subject. Its a battle I had to fight all my life. From school days. My family was never rich, but I decided at a very young age that I will go to university and show my peers and the rich snobs that I am poor, but intelligent. I received my PhD in 2002, the only one in my family. Today I make a decent living and dont have to fught this battle anymore. But I now remind myself that whenever I work with school kids and I am aware of their financial status in life, not to jusge their intellect according to the size of their parent's bank accounts. We have to on all levels constantly fight this stigma!

*nods* I'm the first one from my generation to get a college degree, but I know some of my cousins will be able to because they kept their grades up too. I like the fact that many colleges now (like University of Houston) are purposefully trying to diversify.

I think it is because us poor folks don't have as much for them to take. We aren't worth anything to them. I have been in your shoes, although right now we have good insurance. I have dealt with the doctors office on both sides. Now I can just hear there tone change when they find out what kind of insurance we have. Before we got it they would say somehting like "you don't have any insuarance AT ALL?" UUUURRRGGGG!!! It made me feel like asking them if I should quit my job and just go get the government insurance. At least then I wouldn't have to hear comments like that. (of course I didn't do that) I hate it when people are trying to support themselves and wind up worse off than those living off the government.

I'm getting to the point where I don't think I have any choice any more. I can't stay healthy enough to keep a job long enough to get insurance and these people won't help. *sigh* The whole thing is just so frustrating.

Yes I know what you are saying there these type of People seem to think that People who do not have money like them are stupid People I had to put People in their Place I used to be a Manager and I am now disabled and there have been times when Companies have rang me that I owe money to telling me that I do have to pay them yes I know I do have to pay them but not the amount they are asking well it sunk in eventually with these People that I am not stupid and that I know my rights

Because normally if you'd look at poor areas, youd find that schools and edcation levels are worse than in richer areas. Yes its due to social problems, but simpler minds equate poor=uneductaed. Sadly, many of those simpler minds are rather fanmmous, and such phrases appear commonly on tv Have a nice day!

I know what you mean. I refuse to raise my family in the ghetto, therefor almost all of our family's income goes to paying rent in a higher priced but safe neighborhood. The odd thing is, I found that we are being discriminated against by the programs that help the poor too. "You live in that neighborhood, you can't really be poor and need help then." Even though our pantry is bare.

I hate that crap. Just because I don't make the money you do doesn't mean I'm not educated. I've been able to debate things with people who think they are so much smarter than me and blow them out the water. I've just had a harder life that doesn't mean I'm stupid.

Exactly. Some times the intelligent chose to leave a job BECAUSE they are intelligent. Or take a lower paying one to avoid stress. *sigh* Of course, getting sick while out of work was NOT part of the plan.
