Daughter's Job

My daughter was on only her second day on the job and go into trouble. Here's what happened. she was on the cash register by herself and a lady used her debt card. The register printed out the reciept and my daughter gave it to her. The next customer got her stuff rang up and it happened that the lady with the debt card stuff showed up on her reciept. So my daughter called for the floor manager and the lady just ripped her out right in front of the customers waiting in line. She didn't believe my daughter when she told her that the reciept printed out. She said she wasn't very good at her job and needed to have more help. I couldn't believe it. I told my daughter to go to the top manager and tell him what happened. She should have never yelled at her in front of the customers. The one lady in line said she was sorry to her and said it wasn't her fault. She even tried to stick up for my daughter. Some people don't belong in management. I think she should be fired or demoted. What do you think?

I think that people in management should know that if you are going to yell at an employee you pull them aside into a private place. Not only is it demeaning to the employee, but it upsets customers and gives them a bad impression to see a manager yelling like a maniac in front of everyone. She should definently go over her managers head.

My wife works as a cash operations executive at a large departmental store and yes, there are some cashiers who make mistakes that require her attention. But that's not the point here. Sometimes, it is the customer who caused the problem and my wife sticks out very firmly for her cashiers even if the customer is some stuckup big shot who bought a lot at the store. I believe store managers should act the same way - the customer is not always right. True, cashiers may make mistakes but can be rectified. Yelling at anyone - customer or employee is not even the option. Especially in front of the shopping crowd. What if the employee just got up and left right in the middle of a long line of customers? Your daughter's floor manager is not professional and should not even be employed. If I were the boss, I will fire the floor manager right there and then. Sometimes it is the managers that create bad blood between good employees and their companies, losing money for the boss.

"Sometimes it is the managers that create bad blood between good employees and their companies, losing money for the boss. " I certainly have to agree. I have stopped frequenting a few stores because I heard the manager yelling at an employee and doing so in a demonstrative manner designed obviously for everyone to know what happened. This sort of immature and unprofessional behaviour is sad.

My feeling exactly. I use to cashier and never had that problem. Today people are just trying to look out for themselves. She's lucky that the top manager wasn't out there to see what happened. She probably would have been fired

yes i think that was wrong for the manager to do that in front of the customers. She should be repremanded in some way or another. that was not fair to your daughter and concisering it was only her second day on the job.

That sounds like a manager who's either full of herself or was having a very bad day/week. I can understand that stress might've caused her to blow up without thinking about it—and maybe she's had cashiers make the problem she accused your daughter of, before—but that's not to excuse her. She should've controlled herself. Some form of disciplinary action for that manager seems to be in order. -'Dee

Even if she was having a bad day she should have never done that. Thanks

If the manager had any common sense then she would have pulled the daily journal tape from the register. There are two rolls of paper (called tape) to a register. One roll is used to hand the customer a receipt and the other roll prints the same thing on a journal tape. This is done so that the store has a duplicate of the transaction or purchase made by the customer. What your daughter needs to do is remember the time and date of the incident and have the journal tape pulled for proof. She needs to make her request to the General manager and bring to his/her attention the way in which she was treated by the store manager. Appropriate action should be taken from that point.

I have tried to tell her that but she's going to let it go for now. I have a stubborn daughter. she's just like me. She says if it happens again she will definitaly turn her in.

I don't feel that it is your daughter who got in trouble. She is learning and one thing that will give her great reward for the future work she will have is to deal with awful managers and/or customers. A skilled manager would never yelled let alone in front of anyone else. Make sure your daughter knows that she needs to do her best to learn her job and to disregard the treatment and only hear what she needs to do her work well because one day soon there will be an opening because her current floor manager won't be around forever.

I know this because I worked with some pretty bad managers. She will be okay and if it happens again she will turn her in.

i think its great your daughter and you can communicate and she has someone to go to and we as moms are protective of our kids and dont want to see them mistreated but if she said drop it i would you said your peace and she appears to give people a chance but if it happens again she will probably take it to a higher level and she wants you to see she is an adult enough to work and handle it

Everyone is entitled to a bad day, I think the same as your daughter this supervisor needs more training on how to properly deal with issues. It seems to have been handled rather unprofessionally and she should take the opportunity to explain herself to the boss.

Thanks for that but having a bad day doesn't constitute what this manager did.

I'm sorry to hear about your woes. I know what your daughter is going through, I was once a cashier myself and had to put up with unpleasant customers. Hang in there.

I know what you mean. what the management did was totally wrong. you praise in public and repremand in private. That manager needs to have the same thing done to her. or be counseled for it in private 2 wrongs dont make a right. no need to fire them as everyone can make a mistake and that can be corrected through training. your daughter should have never been left alone on the register to begin with and that is a management problem also.

Oh they shouldn't yell infront of them - but they do! I worked retail as a cashier. It was awful! I stayed out of trouble, but I watched others get yelled at daily.

That floor manager of your daughter was so out of line for yelling at her and in front of customers. Your daughter should go to the top person of that store and let them know what happened and see what can be done about the floor manager cuz the floor manager should have never done that.

That happens a lot these days with bosses somehow they think they &*^% don't stink.. I would definitely go over her head with the receipt and the actions. She definitely should have not yelled in front of the customer and the only one that needed help was the girl yelling not your daughter.

Things like this should never happen but do all to often. I have seen it in both retail, to manufacturing to many other jobs where power reall does go to some peoples heads, or in their semi-stressful jobs they take that out in everyone they feel is below them. In some places its almost like the old class system where I am your boss so I wont treat anyone below me (in the company) with even a ouch of respect. People like this at the very least should be demoted back to the till or shown the door.

Alot of the time people are like this. I used to be a waitress/cashier and my manager was a very frustrated/mad at the world kind of person, so she definitely enjoyed making the coworkers look like idiots in front of customers. this isn't right though. once we got fed up with it and one of the told our REAL boss about the treatment we were getting among other secrets, she was fired. you're right some people don't belong in management.

Good for you guys. That's the way it should always go. People are to afraid to talk to the real boss these days. Wish more people would be like you were

A manager is a person who manages the situation as well as their subordiantes It was so unproffessional on the part of the floor manager to be so rude and mean Well yes, higher authorities should be informed about the same and she should be kicked off

I have had a boss do that to me one time. I worked for a place that handled wedding receptions and I lined up some chairs wrong. She absolutely let me have it in front of the whole family of the bride and groom. The brides mother even gave me a hug. I was soooo embarassed. I think she should have to apologize to your daughter.

I don't work in retail, but I am a manager at a printing press. We have customers that come and go throughout the plant. We have many deadlines and it is a stressful job. It is very hard for us to find quality employees and it seems to me that people do not catch on to their jobs as quickly as they should. However, I would never yell at any of them in front of other customers or employees. I think that this is very disrespectful and could also result in me getting written up and/or fired. I think that as a society we have lost sight of appropriate behavior.

If it was my daughter i would have raised hell. They should be demoted or fired, or transferred to a diff place. Managers are there to help the staff do their jobs, and get rid of the incompetant ones. Not shout at the new capable ones.

i saw also saw similar scenes at mall. there should be some set up that a new employe should work under supervision of expereinced one so that if such problems occur then handled promptly. But in ur case you should complaint to Manager.
