Albet einstein, Isaac Newton and more to the list. These were ordinary people bad in academics and yet went on to become the greatest inventors of all time. What makes them different?

When you say they were ordinary in academics what is true is that they were ordinary in getting good grades or did not have interest in monotonous stuff. They created scientific avenues whcih inspired a generation fo academics. So in that sense they were incredeble academicians. They just did not conform to the existing norms.
