reading through the discussions on mylot i feel some people think the coulor of their skin is somehow a cultural identifier, it means nothing to me, how about you?

The colour of my skin is no real big matter to me, however a nice tan may be good as it makes you look a little healthier perhaps. My wife is a Filipina and I love the colour of her skin. But strangely she wants her skin to be lighter, more like mine. I have found this with other asian women that I work with and I find it odd. When I was in the Philippines I noticed that in the supermarkets there are shelf upon shelf of skin whitening products, not like here where we get the tanning products. It almost seems like we are aiming at culture reversal.

I don't really understand it but my wife tells me that the paler the skin they are regarded as being more beautiful and attractive. I also work with women of Pakistani origin and they have told me that the are regarded as lower down within the class level if they have darker skin. Another thing associated with them also is that if they have a nice slim figure they are also regarded as being lower down the class level. Whether this has anything to do with the men needing to keep control I don't know but it seems really strange to me.

The color of my skin does not matter to me either. What is really important about some one has nothing to do with your skin color. Im not any better or any worse than someone else b/c of what color my skin is. My fiance is black, I am white and my kids are brown. But to me we are all the same. We are equals as people. To many times skin color controls how people are treated. But color is only skin deep, everything else is the same.

well the colour of my skin does not matter for me really....because i am the least stylish creature on earth and too lazy to do anything extra for my skin...presently i am working as an HR and by the time i reach home i become too exhausted to go for skin care. besides it doesn't make any difference to my guy....he says that there is always a glow in my skin though i have a wheatish complexion....i guess because i am happy and contented! i know that there are people who would be by my side, what come may!

skin color shouldn't mean anything to anybody...there is a part of your genetics that determines what shade you will be (i guess)it doesn't make a person what they are..maybe if people were more concerned about the way they treat other people, things would be better

The color of one's skin matters to an individual when it matters to the outside world. If a person is the same skin color as the "dominant culture" within which they live, then they don't "stand out" and are not identified by the color of their skin, but perhaps by other ethnic/cultural markers.

ok, i like your thinking, so skin coulor could become a cultural identifier to a minority group?

It matters to me because i have vitiligo. I am losing my natural brown skin and getting white spots on my face and hands. It matters because i have no protection from the sun and it does burn especially in the summer. Can a leopard change its spots?haha! Take care Eskarena1.

yes skin coulor is just one of the many divisions we use to steriotype and categorise people, all done to hide our own perceived inferiority. maybe when some individuals start having a little more self respect, this sort of pointless categorising will come to an end, blessed be

it doesn't matter in the least to me...as far as i'm concerned, as far as races go, theres' good and bad in them all...and as long as someone is decent to me, i'll have no problem with them...even if i do have a problem, it will not be because of the color of their skin.

I think you have put your finger exactly on the difficulty, if we have a problem with someone it can be used as evidence of racism, where in reality it may well be because there are other problems. If i have a problem with someone i can guarantee it will not be skin coulor that causes it

It means totally nothing to me as well. Why we have to make our skin color as a big issue???? I don't know why but at least there is a lot of people who doesn't care what is the color of you skin,I am ok with that.

i really don't care about skin colour, i am white and almost all of my friends are africans and i absolutely have no problems with that. and i find it more joyful hanging around with them rather then the others. I understand that there is a big issure concerning the skin colour but my advice is to start respecting each other. The important thing is being human....thank you for the nice topic:)

Diffrence of color of skin does not exist in my vocabulary at all. In my eyes I dont see color I see a human who deserves respect just lie every other person i nthis world. I teach my kids the same thing. We all have the exact same organs in the inside and all of our blood bleeds red. It is what is in someones heart that is important not there skin color.

The color of people's skin doesn't matter one bit to me. However I don't have one black friend at all. Not because I'm racist but because i'm a metalhead, and would have nothing in common with the average black person because 9 times out of 10 they usually they listen to rap, which i despise. I've only seen about 3 black people at metal concerts in my entire life.

I think that since I grew up knowing about racism, skin color does effect my judgement of others, I try not to let it. It is very sad.
