Why is the government of Iran blocking access to certain websites such as YouTube, Wikipedia and others?

I was not aware of any attempt to block access to certain sites, and cannot think of any logical reason to do so. It would be a formidable task to create such a block, and I would be intrigued to know how they hope to achieve it. Apart from the option of blocking all internet access, they would need to create an individual block via all ISPs, which is not an easy task unless you have a seriously tight control on all servers.

I didn't think it was possible but it is in the news on yahoo's list. Here is a link to it: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061205/ap_on_hi_te/iran_internet

It appears that they are claiming to be blocking false information from the opposition. This sounds very much like an excuse for censorship.

I suspect it is because if people can access these types of sites they might see and read something that appeals to them. Heaven forbid that should happen because that might mean an uprising about the conditions under which these people live. Also a lot of countries do not allow the freedom that we enjoy here in the western world, but then again we do live in a democracy which again is something that is alien to some countries.

I didn't even know that was happening, how is it possible for them to do that?

I had no idea this was going on until I read your post. This is very interesting to say the least. Wouldn't it be like propaganda, telling the Iranian people they have been blocked as if the companies actually blocked them. It would just set the people in the right frame of mind if a war should break-out. This is just my opinion, but it seems logical to me since Iran is trying to stir up something so they can justify their actions in the future.

The reason that Iran is banning these sites .... and any others that might show a better way of life .... is simply because they want to control the people who live there. They do not want the people to see that there are better things than the conditions they force the Iranian people to live under. This is not a democratic government at all in Iran .... and in fact is worse than many other countries around the world .... they want to suppress people to such an extent that they completely shatter their individuality ..... not unusual in countries that are rules by despots. Iran will continue to ban these sites ... and many more ... for as long as the current leaders are in power ... and they will do anything they can to stay in power .... that includes stifling any opposition to what they say .... and certainly not allowing people to have freedom of any sort ... especially the freedom to know about what the rest of the world enjoys.

I agree with you and I am amazed at some replies that sound almost defensive of their policies to block these sites. Knowledge is power and they don't want them to have the knowledge.

I have a friend that was married to an Iranian guy back before there was so many problems with the US and Iran. I didn't really know him well but he seemed nice enough. I lost touch with my friend shortly after that. I have often wondered what ever happened to her, if they are still together, if he is still in the US, etc. She was a very independent woman that spoke her mind and didn't bow to anyone so I just wonder how well they got along.

Actually have a bit of knowledge on this country ... good mates sister married to someone who fled that country years ago ... long story short was he worked for foreign embassy ... his family held hostage to certain demands. He was involved with his mates sister so he fled through third country. Some of his family killed ... he says as an example to others. Evil people .. very evil ... they will not even allow emails between people who have fled country and those still there in Iran.

I didn't know that someone or an entity can block certain websites from one country. I can't understand why their government is blocking access with these websites you mentioned above. I think this is stupid! I can't think of any reason why.

I had never heard this. I wonder if it could be something regarding that they feel if people from Iran were to see stuff like this it could Flare into a Wrong belief pattern on life, and they just want to keep people from thinking ill about others and things people might be saying?
