Looking for new, interesting rock music (not heavy metal).

I am kind of an oldster who thought I would never fail to keep up with the latest music trends. Well I am there. Clearly giving an indication of how old I am, I used to buy the following types of music in the past: Bruce Springsteen, Counting Crows, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and many others. I like rock and ballads (no Maria Carey or Gwen Stefani, but Howie Day or Lifehouse or James Blount). So what CD do you recommend that I buy? What am I missing that I would really like?

Your music tastes kind of beg for an eclectic type of radio station... Try listening to http://www.xpn.org They have a phenominal playlist and have everything from rock to new age... they also can make you a CD from their playlists. As this is a public radio station, thye have the freedom and audience variety that radio stations used to have. Hope you enjoy, my friend! :)

There's nothing better than public radio or independent minded thinking! Thanks for the suggestion.

Along the lines of WXPN is another public station from NYC, WFUV.org. You can stream their station over the Internet or listen to many of their archived shows and live performances from a wide range of artists. They and XPN are what would be generally called Americana, sort of modern folk-rock-pop type of music.

I'd recommend Muse - Black Holes and Revelations. I'm playing it all the time at the moment and I'm a bit of an oldster too. Love it!

Pink Floyd will always be good. Another band my son's high school friends appreciate is the Doors. The old is new again. If you look on Amazon for some music you know you like, you'll get suggestions for what else you might like. Sometimes they're way off, but when I'm gift-shopping I find CDs that people appreciate, or at least they say they do, by looking up something I know they already have.

Great suggestion about Amazon. I really pay attention to their book recommendations, so I should try and hook into getting ideas that way. I remember in college, I hated the Doors because I thought the music was depressing; I have since learned better, some things do age better with a little time.

I don't know if you would like any indie music but lately I've become very interested in it. Music that combines beautiful piano playing with great songs that have a rock feel to them. My favorite albums are "Begin to Hope" by Regina Spektor and "I'm Wide Awake.." by Bright Eyes. I hope that helped.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do like indie music (some of course), but just don't hear enough of it to remember when I'm at Borders or Virgin or Best Buy.

My personal favorite if Michael Ball. He performs a wide range for music from movies themes (My Heart Will Go On and The Rose,) show tunes (he was Marius in Les Miserables,) contemporary/easy listening, and lately he's been getting into some new country (ala Garth Brooks.) He has a fantastic voice and great stage presence. Only problem is I have a hard time finding any of his CDs -- usually order them on ebay or watch videos on youtube.

I wish I could help but it's hard for me to seperate between rock, alternative and punk these days. I use to be able to but now they all kinda blurr together with their styles so I'm not sure which ones you would like. I enjoy alot of the newer bands that are coming out and are ending up popular but then they learn towards more of a pop-punk or pop-rock image - uggh so confused :) I think you can never go wrong with Green Day! *lol* My son thinks you should listen to: 30 Seconds to Mars Angels and Airwaves +44 My Chemical Romance Fall Out Boy Taking Back Sunday All American Rejects AFI Three Days Grace Dashboard Confessional From First to Last Senses Fail ... just for starters :)

Who doesn't love Green Day? I also like All American Rejects and My Chemical Romance, too, so looks like this list is on the right track for me. Thanks!

I would suggest checking out a site like iTunes and download individual songs instead of entire CDs. The songs are usually 99 cents each. In fact, I can't remember the last time I bought a CD. I find a lot of new music from the show "Grey's Anatomy", which has a great soundtrack every week. I also really like Snow Patrol, KT Tunstall, and Sarah MacLachlan. If you go on iTunes you can also listen to 30-second clips from songs to get an idea if you will like it or not before buying it.
