My poorly Doberman - any ideas what this could be?

My Newty-dog is nearly 13 and has several fatty lumps. We went for her yearly check last week and she was fine. For a long time she has had a little hard marble sized lump under the skin on her back. This morning it has suddenly grown overnight and filled up with what feels like fluid and is so large I can only just fit my had over it and it seems to still be growing. She gets to see the vet tomorrow morning and it doesn't seem to be painful when you touch it or to be bothering her. I'm really, really scared, what if it's something awful? I think I might loose her soon. Just want to cry my eyes out all the time. Any ideas what it could be?

I am scared that this is the beginning of the end too. Maybe they'll just be able to drain it. She had a small cancer mole removed on her throat this time last year and has a few other moles too. As it is not bothering her and she doesn't seem aware of it I'm hoping I'm over reacting, it's just that she's my baby and I can't bear to think of her being poorly or in pain. Will let you know what the vet says, thank-you so much for your kind thoughts.

Newty's fine! It's a big bruise like a concussion so he cannot drain it as it will fill back up, it should just go down so I don't have to worry yet. It's like all my Christmas's and Birthdays come at once! I really thought it was gonna be something bad. Let's just hope it goes down. All the people rooting for her must have helped so thank-you very much! Thanks again!

aww that is so sad :( dont worry untill you have seen the vet but if its not soar and isnt really bothering her then it could just be something simple like a cyst or along those lines or at least thats what i hope it is for your sake :p keep strong for her and dont let her know how you feel as they can tell when you are sad :P I hate to say this but if it is something seriouse instead of feeling sorry take the day out and spend the whole day with her make sure she knows you really love her then :p Sorry i couldnt be more help but im not a vet but i do know how you feel :p

Thank-you so much, have calmed down a little now, convinced myself they'll just drain the fluid off, and it'll be ok, her fatty lumps are. Will let you know what the vet says. If she has to have anaesthetic I'll put if off because it's not good for old dogs and it's not bothering her. Still scary though!

We went to the vets and she's fine! It's a big bruise like a concussion in your head with rushing fluids so he cannot drain it as it will fill back up, it should go down by it'self so I don't have to worry unless it doesn't. It's like all my Christmas's and Birthdays come at once! I really thought it was gonna be something bad this time. All the people rooting for her must have helped so thank-you very much! Now lets just hope it goes down quickly. Thanks again!

Has she been in a fight or had any kind of injury? It sounds like it could be an abcess of some kind. I see now that this was posted 5 days ago. Do you know what it is yet?

Hi, thanks for your responce! We've been to the vets and I've calmed down now. It's a big bruise - like a concussion with rushing fluids. The vet stuck a big needle in it and showed us the fluid and says it'll go down by itself eventually and to take her back if we are worried. If he drains it then it'll only fill up again so to leave it alone. She must have knocked herself somewhere although we can't think how unless it was the boys. You are clever to think of an injury! It's not bothering her and it's not going down yet but I'm determined not to worry about it until the new year now. It wobbles when she's playing - like a jelly, bless her. Thanks again.

I am glad to hear that you consulted your vet on this. My dog also had it, and at some stage I had it removed, Its a relatively small operation and they recover quickly, but I think it depends on the dogs age!

Thank-you for your reply and confidence that it's going to be ok. I feel sure it is fluid and can be drained, although I am scared of the anaesthetic as she's getting older. I feel a lot calmer this evening as I am now sure she is not aware of it so not in pain. Her other lumps are hard because they are fatty. I will let you know what the vet says, thanks again!

I have a dog with the same problem. She also has a lump in her back for over a year now.. But unlike your case its growing at a very slow pace... I can see a very slight growth in its size after one year.. It doesnt bother my dog either.. So as long as it doesnt bother her.. it means that things are ok... But after you consult your vet, do tell me what was the remedy and how serious is it.. It would be great if you could pass on this info..

Newty has lumps like your dog, the vet says they are fat and doesn't want to disturb them incase it causes something. Apparently because they are outside her cavity they are best left. The new lump is fluid - like a big blister under her skin. He thinks it is like a concussion on your head where the fluids rush to protect you like a bruise. She must have knocked herself but we can't think when. It should go down by itself but it hasn't started to yet. He said if he drains it it'll fill up again and to go back if we are worried. You can see it wobbling like a jelly when she's playing - it's really odd. Thank-you for your concern, hope your dogs lumps are ok too!
