This all depends on how deep you want to go with it, you see 3Ds Max was created with the amateur artist in mind, however I personally use Maya because of it's advanced structures, you see there are several arguments on which to use first, some say 3Ds Max to learn and then advance over to Maya. I personally started using Maya first and I still use maya, I've been using it for just over a year and started with Maya 6.0 but they just released Maya 8.0. To buy a commercial release of Maya will cost you around $7000 bucks, extreamly expensive but you have to realize that this program is bought by industry leaders in 3D art, they create fully feature films with this software and it is used in a lot of game art. You can get a free learning edition of Maya however it places a watermark over your rendered image so you cannot sell it, the other two options you have is to try and download it from a P2P network but this is illigal, your other option is to spend the 7K, I personally did not spend the 7K (Shh, LoL). But just as a pointer you need to focus on modelling if your using it for architecture, dont get cought up in a lot of the other features until later, focus on modelling, everyone needs to learn modelling in order to succeed in creating wonderful works of art with Maya. :)
