Should tanning beds be banned?

Many people use tanning beds to have that tropical look all year round. I have friends who have one, two sisters, and they are both always tawny, but they are not all that old and their skin looks like thin leather. It's not attractive to me. Also I understand that tanning beds and tanning in general carry a risk of skin cancers. Apparently some places will not allow people under 18 to tan without written permission from their parents. I was once in a hair salon where they had tanning beds as well. People were coming in to get tanned just before going on vacation in beach areas. They wanted to look like they "fit in", as soon as they arrived there. This seems ridiculous to me. I thought showing off the tan when you get back was the thing!! I just don't understand why people feel the need to tan when the public is being warned more and more about the dangers of this practice.

Even though there is a warning in general. I do not think people realize that tanning beds actually give their skin the old leathery look as you described. I have seen people and known instantly that they do the tanning bed thing. Can only hope those that feel they need to get a fake tan will resort to the Mystic Spray on tan. This is far less harmful. I guess all was can do though is warn out loved ones. After that, it is their choice, right?

People don't learn from warnings. They only learn from their own mistakes unfortunately.

I know some young girls who STILL go out in the sun on purpose in summer. Scares me for them!

I don't think it should be banned. I do think that people should be cautious of how much they use them.

I have always thought so. I think it is also up to the tanning salon employees to help keep track of time and check that settings are right.
