What are your thoughts on the people from Canada and Mexico crossing the border? Why is the USA trying to make it so difficult to cross the border? What do you think are the main concerns that are causing such strict policies to be written? Are you comfortable with people from Canada and Mexico in your country? If you are from Canada or Mexico what do you feel about US citizens coming in and out of your country?

I am fine with Candadians coming in, no problems with them whatsoever. But the border to Mexico needs to be closed for good. It is RIDICOLOUS how many illegal immigrants are there. I recently moved to a new state, and knew nothing of the city we were moving to. Well, my husband and I were in for a BIG surprise. The apartment complex we live in is INFESTED (and I use that in the most literal sense) with mexicans. We call our complex "Little Mexico". These people have no respect for other people. They are loud, obnoxious, and think they rule the world. If Pres. Bush can do one thing right, he can close the borders to Mexico FOREVER!!!!

Many people cross the border from Mexico to the US for work and jobs. Our money is worth so much more then theirs and it is easier to make. With Canada the governmment is worried about terrorists coming in.

I too have lived in a town that had a large community of mexicans. They robbed my house 3 times in two years. This did not make me happy at all. The use false SS numbers. they would use the wellfare system. When they shouldnt be recieving it anyways sence they are illegals. Then they would recieve WIC. When there are people out there like the elderly, or young couples that have fallen on hard times. They wonder why there isnt enough funds in the pot so to speak. I do not believe they should recieve any help at all. Its are tax paying money that funds this from the people that are leagal. If they want to come over the leagal way. I have no problems with it. Do it as most of are for fathers did.

I think one of the problemsthat people have with them coming over illegaly is them taking US jobs. The reality of the situation is that many US citizens would put themselves way above the jobs that the Mexicans are taking. Those guys are making below minimum wage as it is. If you hire an American to do the job you are going to have to pay him twice as much, plus he is going to want benefits. Guess who the cost of goods and services gets passed along to? You the consumer.

Growing up in California there has always been a long debate on whether they should tighten the borders. When I first read this, I thought of that really cheesy movie, "A Day Without Mexicans". The movie shows how California's economy would fall apart. The movie was horribly done, but the point remained that if we sent away everyone with and without greencards back to Mexico there's no way our day to day life would be able to continue! California would crumble like Barry Bonds after he stopped taking roids! During college I worked with legal and illegal immigrants in Monterey at a couple of different places. I would like to see them stay regardless of their legality. All the true Mexicans from Mexico that I've met were probably the hardest working people I've been around! I think that holds true for most foreigners. So, let them stay! Most of them do jobs that others don't want to do anyways.

I agree with you about most Mexican's being some of the hardest workers I have ever seen. I also agree that they will do many of the jobs that none of us want to do. Not only will they do those jobs, but they will do them for lower wages as well.

When they move here to the US, they often pool their resources and live together. Rather then live 2 or 3 to a home or apartent like most of us would do, they will live with 4 or more. Everyone is working, everyone is paying for food, rent, and utilities. This allows each of them to save quite a bit of money.

I always thought it was amazing how dedicated some of them are... I know that many of them save up and send money back to Mexico to support thier family. I also find it unbelieveable how they save when they have low paying jobs!

Have they made it harder for U.S. citizens to go to Canada, or vice versa? I haven't heard of any changes, but I like to go to Canada, so maybe I should look into this. People from Canada or Mexico coming into the U.S. is fine by me, as long as they're legal. There were at least a couple of times before the 9/11 attacks that alleged terrorists tried to come into the U.S. from Canada though thinly guarded border checks, so I can understand why the U.S. might want to tighten things up. But if it's harder, I can understand it would be frustrating for travelers.

The US is trying to make it mandatory that all US and Canadian citizens have a passport in order to cross the border. Something like 70% of citizens in both countries do not own one. The law was for this to happen by 2010 but there is a rush to have it put in place next year.

Mine is set to do that soon too and here I am trying to move to Canada! The Canadian government does not want to enforce the law because the US is it's biggest trading partner and they know that many of the truck drivers who go back and forth daily don't have passports. Trade would grind to a halt in that respect. But if the US insists on making this a low, then Canada is prepared to make it touger for US citizens to get into their country.

I think america has enough problems with people already in the country, never mind the ones that are just getting there!

It's not the people that are the issue, it is the policy that is an issue. We want to play world police, but we also want to close our borders. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I go to US all the time for shopping. I never have a problem at the border, although they are usually rude but that is their job i guess. I dont mind at all US citizens coming into Canada, afterall it is a free country right?

That is y point exactly, I just don't understand why we insist on aking it tougher to cross between the borders. Afterall we are just all human beings.

My question is why is it going to take over a year for me to get my citizenship and then be able to work there? That process has also tightened up. Although my friend was coming back from Belgium to Canada and there was a guy on the plane and when he got to customs he was told congradulations on getting your work visa to work at Loblaws. How can someone from belgium get a work visa that easily, when I can't get one at all?

Well that is a thought, but why a refugee from Belgium? Plus he had a work visa, for refugee status you don't even need a visa.

I'm not certain, but I think refugee claimants are given priority. Best wishes!
