How to introduce Spanish to my baby? What should I be doing?

I feel it is very important for kids to learn other languages. I studied Spanish for a long time and was fluent at one time, but have lost a lot of it. I understand most things, but when it comes to speaking, it is slow and I make a lot mistakes. I would like for my son (8 months old) to start learning spanish. How can I introduce him to Spanish. What can I do? I don't feel fluent enough to really talk to him all the time in Spanish.

When I was young my first language was spanish due to my grandparents so for me english as a second language. I learned English mostly from watching good old pbs and sesame street. The easiest way to introduce Spanish in my opinion is to have word association books. I found those were easy for kids to learn a new language. Also start with counting in both english and in spanish. If you need help with your spanish send me a message.

Yo no lo escribo muy bien pero si lo hablo con mis abuelos. Another way to introduce spanish to your baby is to place some elementary spanish songs. Where are you from by the way?

I also think this is important, it gets them involved in something they will be able to use throughout their lives. It also teaches them that our culture and lifestyle is not the only kind out there. It is very good to teach our children about diversity. I have all the Baby Einstein DVD's which are very good for them, and helps them learn. There is a language one that introduces different languages to them in a way they can understand. You can find it at the following website:http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Language-Nursery/dp/B00005YUPM Here are some other resources that could help!1. www.pentonoverseas.com 2. http://www.amazon.com/Brainy-Baby-Spanish/dp/B000063UYR 3. http://www.babyuniverse.com/pro/baby/66431/TeachYourBaby- Spanish.html 4. http://www.babyclassroom.com/spanish.html Hope these work out for you! Good Luck, and Adios!

They have a lot of tapes out there so it should be easy for you to relearn and teach him. Because children copy what their parents do good luck

First of all I guess the child needs to grasp the mother tongue. Once a language system has got into the child's brain, it becomes easy to learn another one. Though it is easier to learn languages once you are young, it is not advisable to confuse two langauges while the child is picking up the mother tongue. If you do not feel conficent about your Spanish, it is better to train the child with someone who is really proficient in it, preferably a native Spanish speaker.

Tapes sound like a good idea, as well as speaking it to the child as well. I have several friends who are bilingial, and speak both languages to their children, and their children learn BOTH languages quickly. You could also try flash cards, or incorporating spanish nouns into his favorite toys and games...

As previously mentioned, there are some great programs out there to start little people on learning other languages. You might want to buff up your own skills too because communicating back and forth will be one of the best ways to make sure your little boy is learning to effectively communicate in Spanish..

I think starting out with lalabies in spanish would be nice. It is not forcing the language but it is getting the child familiar with the sounds. I think that knowing a second language is a good thing. I am sorry that I was born and raised in the US and am forced to learn spanish. I think the first language that you should learn is the language of the land you live in and then move on. However, the so called experts say that children learn better than adults. There are a few songs in German that I like. By listening to the songs I have picked up some phrases. I think by playing song for a child will do the same thing. It is a slow start but a start.
