I am taking a class on basic psychology, and my professor wants us to find out what seems to be the number one fear in the world and what it is that frightens people the most about those fears, and I figured what better way to get multiple sources of info than mylot so PLEASE HELP!!

I have the same fear as you - about anything bad happening to my daughter. I also have a fear of dying and leaving her and my hubby alone. I'm not really scared of dying expect in how it relates to my daughter and my hubby. I have a fear of poverty. I am terrified of the sea, and mountain passes. Now this is going to sound really strange, but I have a phobia about fruit. I don't even like to talk about fruit I hate it so much! But I think this comes from my phobia about worms.... Oh my... a psychologists delight I am!!

I agree I think my professor would have a hay day trying to tackle all of those phobias. Do you think there is a cure for phobias? Will talking about them or confronting them actually help?

I'm not sure. I've heard of the 'desensitisation / exposure' technique for phobias, but I've always thought I just couldn't bear to go through that with worms or fruit - I am just too scared of them and too disgusted! And the same applies to the sea! With the more hypothetical fears such as the poverty I think that maybe talking about them might help. I think it would take quite a lot of talking though! Maybe hypnosis as well. Or self-hypnosis. What do you think?

Self-hypnosis? How would you wake yourself up, that is given that you are able to put yourself into a hypnotic state. This may be rumor but I heard that like 15% of the population cannot be hypnotized. What if you are one?

Personally my biggest fear is dying alone. I want to die in the arms of the man that I love if I have to die at all.

Maybe this is an old question since it was one month ago and you needed it for the fall semester at college, but I will post anyway. I had psychology in college too, and I wouldn have to say the response I got then and it still seems relevant today, is fear of the unknown.
