What do you think of a guy carrying his wife or girlfriend's handbag?

It's a common sight here in Singapore. I see many guys carrying his wife or girlfriend's handbag, when the lady's hands are free! I'm not sure if I'm funny or what, but it really irks me! I can't believe the woman is so lazy & incapacitated that they cannot even carry their own handbag! It's fine if the guys are carrying the shopping bags, but not handbag! Guys, why on earth would you want to even carry a lady's handbag??? I asked some friends, and some commented that the guy was just trying to be a gentleman. I'd think he looks more like a sissy than gentleman walking around with a woman's handbag. What are your views about this? Care to share?

Yeah, I think it's funny looking. But I know that some women's purses get pretty heavy and some tend to get sore shoulders or necks so I can understand that a man would be a gentleman by taking care of the burden for his lady. Personally, my purses are no bigger than a box of envelopes.

Whoa! If little handbags can be too heavy for the lady, she must be really fraile. Good luck to the boyfriend! Thanks for sharing :)

LOL well i have to admit that i'm guilty at time...i love to carry this big Elle bag that's so convenience as you can throw in whatever you want inside...as a result it gets too heavy at times..and my bf will offer to carry it for me..but of course he dont put it on the shoulder like we women do so it's not really as sissy as it look...but i was thinking that the bag doesnt really look so feminine, so it's ok. but if im carrying a handbag..no way would i let my bf hold it...it look too weird

Yep! I was actually referring to ladies' handbags! Well, I can understand if it those fully stuffed shopping bags that are huge & heavy. It's the little ladies' handbags they carry that make the guys look soooo sissy! *lol*

I have asked my fiance sometimes when both of my hands were full and needed a hand or I needed to fix my coat etc before carrying my bag on shoulder type case but I wouldn't expect him to carry my handbag at any time for that long to know that he is a gentleman..lol He is more than enough to called "gentleman" without holding my bag any time while we are at the mall etc :)

It is understandable if your hands are full of of stuff & other shopping bags. It's those girls who have both hands free, and refuse to carry their own handbags! Ah, some girls are just so impossible... Sigh...

If it's just for a short while, say while you are trying out some clothes or when you visit the restroom, then it's fine. But these guys are like carrying the handbag for the lady! It's funny... It's quite a common sight here in Singapore.

I do not hold a woman's purse, not even for one second. Girls, if you want a guy to hold your purse for a second so you can adjust your coat or whatever, here's a better idea: PUT YOUR DAMN HANDBAG DOWN. If you're a guy and you hold a woman's purse: you, my friend, are a bonesmooch.

Sorry, but I would find that very very strange indeed, hardly macho, and in this country it would be frowned upon and guys would get a hard time and ridiculed for it. They wouldn't be called a gentleman here in the UK. I certainly wouldn't do it, there are other ways to look after a woman and carrying their handbag is definitely not one of them!

I agree! There are many other ways of showing concern other than carrying the lady's bag! Apparently, it's quite a common sight here. I'd freak out if my husband offers to carry my handbag... Yikes!

I don't think that is really a problem if a woman give her handbag to a man. I am sure that there is a reason for that. Probably the man, as someone suggets, want to be a gentleman (and I don't think he looks like a sissy just for that). Obviously if they do that without reason it sounds a bit strange to me.

Well if the guy is just holding it for a while when the lady goes to the washroom, or when her hands are busy with something else, then it's fine. The type I'm referring to is when the lady's hands are empty & the guy still has to carry her tiny-weeny handbag! Ugh!

Hey, I do that! It's what SNAGs (Sensitive, New Age Guys) do! Tsk tsk, Singaporean girls always complain! "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" :) BTW, it takes a confident gentleman to carry his lady's handbag. "Confident" cuz u don't care if people think u're a sissy! Cheers!
